Laura, My son is in Bangor, WA.  He lives in the barracks when not underway.  While the boat is in dry dock it is being manned by the gold crew but he is helping out with different things--he is on the blue crew.  I think they do sleep on the boat when they are on duty.  Not sure, will have to ask him.

Mrsb...hope your son gets SD. We are so happy ours got Groton, we live in NJ. Ours so far knows one friend who also has Groton, but different Sub. I would be happy if he knew and saw regularly 3-4 people. He reminds me often when I ask questions that its not sleep away camp. I will be learning so much in next few months.

There is a news article on Fox news that discusses the new sleep schedule for submariners.

Yes a sub, not saying which one 'cause of underway.

He lives in the barracks when in port, but the subs are always manned 24/7.

Hi Laura!  My son would like San Diego, Pearl or Bangor-I would like SD since it's only an hour and a half from here and we could see him once in a while!  But of course, he will go where the Navy sends him!  Yes, he is in the barracks.  He was in the boater barracks at first, only him and another Sailor but recently got moved.  He is now closer to a bunch of his friends so he likes that.  Doesn't have as much room now as he did before but it's only for a few more months.  His group is supposed to graduate in July or early August.  He does like Groton but is kind of sad because a lot of his friends have already moved on to their ship assignments.
