philly_mamasota -- what wonderful news!  Congrats to your son, and enjoy him when he gets his leave.

My son is back on land! The day before they docked we received a letter from his CO that he earned his silver dolphins!! I know he kept saying his Chief said he was ahead of schedule on his qualifications but he was still working at it. This last underway he did it and his CO wrote a great letter to us and added a personal note which was so special. We framed it and put it on the wall with his picture from boot camp. I asked him if he shaved off his mustache and he said "We all shaved off our beards!" Seems like to build up morale they all grew beards. They have 5 work days to complete and then I'm hoping he will have an idea when he can get leave to visit family. I'm thankful the Lord kept them all safe and I continue to pray for my son and the entire crew and their families.

Lori S. What a great achievement for your son, & for you as his proud mama. Congratulations! I'm sure it was well deserved!

Shea - That's exciting too!

The good news just keeps rolling in!

Congrats LoriS. I almost think it's more exciting for us parents when they get an award than it is for them. My son recently had to get new dress whites and was commenting about how inexpensive they were, even with having them hemmed, all the patches sewn on and getting a longer bar because he now had so many ribbons/medals that they wouldn't fit on the old one. So of course I asked about that and his comment was "awe mom you know just for achieving certain things". Gotta love the modesty!! He's single so I have no extra source for info!!

LorieS - HOW EXCITING!  And humble of him.

LorieS -- What a great achievement for your son!! From what I understand, the NAM is awarded by the captain/commander of the boat to either junior officers/enlisted who have performed "meritorious service." It can be combat or non combat. M
I asked my sailor about it and he said for non-combat, "You'd have to do something that saved the boat, a shipmate or just really impress the hell outta the captain." When I quipped that Wikipedia could have told me that he dryly replied, "Ok. Think fire, mouth-to-mouth and captain's pet project. Better?" LOL (smart aleck!)

I'm thinking whatever it is, your son deserved it and I'm so happy for you both!!

Hang in there....he will respond as soon as he can. Keep writing to him. He can still receive emails just not reply yet. I haven't heard from my son in quite a while but I write everyday.

I still haven't heard anything... Wish I had prepared myself for this! Trying to stay positive and writing every day.. waiting for a reply is killing me!
