Philly: I am sorry to hear of your dads passing. Your OMB will be of great help in getting in touch with your son. So does the Red Cross. I had this conversation with my son also on the last deployment. Two uncles are old and not doing so great, he agreed that an email would be fine, but that was us. It ended up he was at a stop and FB messengered(is that a word?).
While the boat was out,it was a joke that I prayed for a whole "boatload" of men!!!

We just came back from Hawaii. We were able to witness the USS Charlottes homecoming. It was awesome. I got the privilege of putting a lei on the sailors as they got off the sub(it was me or the cute girl from the USO). We helped put up the "cups" on the chain link fence that said Ahoha Charlotte, we were able to watch the Change of Command(the Charlotte has a new commander), we toured the sub, my husband played golf with our son and his friend who also stayed with us, I fixed a few dinners for him, and we enjoyed each others company. There were 70 family members that were able to come from the mainland and from what I understand that was a lot. A lot of memories were made in the time we were there!

And yes on this last deployment there were times when I did not hear from him for weeks! I keep sending short emails, but the longer he was silent the less I sent because I doubted if he would read them all, for him it was just knowing that I sent them.

Blessings to all you ladies and men. May the Lord give you peace in the deployments of your sons.

Philly_mamasota, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss.  It's been about 6 weeks since I heard from my son so I know how you feel. Hang in there.  Sending good thoughts your way.

Philly_mamasota, so sorry to hear of the lose of your dad, earlier this month. My sincere condolences go out to you & your family. It sounds like you raised a wonderful & compassionate young man, willing to give his communication time to another sailor with a family. Hoping you'll hear from him soon.

I emailed my son almost every day so he had word from home.

Philly, if he gave his time to another sailor that is an incredible thing to do. Be proud. I had long silences when mine was deployed. Heard from his with emails and phone calls fairly often at first but after the new year only heard from him only a handful of times.

Wow, no word for 2 months! Our boy hasn't reported to his boat yet, but I sure hope my wife (and I) don't freak out too much at such long silences.

philly_mamasota, I am sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. I am sure it was even more difficult for you knowing that you can't share the info with your son. We have had this talk with our son about his grandma's. He said if he is underway to not let him know until he is back. Hopefully, you will hear from you son soon and he will be back soon.

Thanks, ITgal, for the link to life on a nuclear sub! I haven't heard from my son since 3/23/16. They are on the FamilyGram program so only two 50-word messages a month allowed. I was talking to his brother last night (who is on an aircraft carrier) and I told him my theory is his brother gave his communication time to another sailor who is married with kids. He agreed that would be something his big brother would do! It's hard not hearing from him but I know God is in control and has him in His hands. His grandpa (my Dad) passed away on 5/3/16 but I will not share that in an e-mail. I'll wait until he returns to port and we speak to each other. He said once he returned to base, his first leave would be to see my family anyway. I pray for these sub crews and their families every day! Bless them, Lord!

ITgal, thank you for sharing the link, it has taken me 3 years to acquire a lot of the information included in the article! I completely understand where you stand with your son, they really don't share a lot and for very good reasons. Whenever I read or watch a video about sub life it never ceases to amaze me about the jobs all of our sons are doing each day! God Bless each and every one of them!!
