The awards are given each quarter to those Sailors who stand out from the rest for their professional accomplishments, commitment to their job, and military bearing.

Normally the Chief's write up certain Sailors to go for the award. Than the Sailors go through a uniform inspection and an oral board, where they are asked questions about everything from current events to military regulations. Only one Sailor from each command is picked for Blue jacket of the quarter.

It has been a while since I posted anything here, but just had to brag a bit - my sailor was just named Blue Jacket of the Quarter for his boat! He shared a nice piece of paper that says this, and he said that he was surprised to get it since he hasn't yet gotten his Dolphins. This seems like a big deal - is it?

Hi. It's been a while since I was last on sight. 3 weeks till married son ships out to bootcamp and then to groton ct. Trying to understand a bit further, what son and daughter-n-law can expect as far as her getting to ct to accompany hubby. My understanding is bc, then to ct for indoc and tgen BESS basic sub schooling, then just prior to graduating from BESS, will get orders for Which job, thus which A school. Then qualufy for accompany orders for wide to join him.
Has anyone recently gone thru the process, who can share some details. Anything they need to do before he leaves for bootcamp to assure best transition? Anyone's spouse move up sooner, see hubby at his, availability during his first wks at school, prior to his being completely qualified for navy housing, navy move? Does wife have to be on this end when navy moves belongings up to ct, or can i, his mom be here for shipping household goods? Any recommendations greatly appreciated on any of this! Thanks!!!!

Thanks everybody.  We got an email today and he didn't mention anything related to the earthquakes.  If they felt anything I guess it wasn't noteworthy:)

Very interesting article on the German sub.  It would be very interesting to tour once restored.  I would have loved to be the diver that discovered the sub.  I do not do cold and murky water.  Caribbean water and warm at 70-80 degrees.  Maybe I will find gold one day in the Caribbean water.  Hope all are doing well and maybe getting some spring weather.  Nice here in GA.  Son's deployment homecoming is getting closer.  The date has changed once, the days of his stand down leave has gone from the first half to the second half.  Their last planned port call has been cancelled. They are running silent and we are leaving for Italy this weekend.  We will be gone 2 weeks and had planned on talking to him before we left. Not gonna happen.  His gf has changed her plane ticket once and may have to again.  Navy life is exciting.  We do have a condo for 9  days so we can be in Norfolk for homecoming and he can stay with us on the the days he does not have duty.  We are driving a car and his stuff back to VA so we are more flexible with our dates.  My husband will work from VA so no big deal about asking for time off and have to keep changing it.  If he has to fly out on a service call he will fly from Norfolk instead of Atlanta.  Thank God for flexible hours and a home office.  He has been lucky and has been able to be home all this week.  He is getting lots of paperwork done before we leave.  Looking forward to Italy.

Co-twinsailorsmom I hope the bakery is doing well. I am sure once spring and summer reaches CO your busy will be booming.  I hope you son's are doing well.

It was scary seeing the earthquakes in Japan.  I thought about all the mom's with sailors stationed in Japan.  I wondered if the subs in the area could feel anything.

To all the mom's a big NMH and to all of us mom's with sailors deployed we are one day closer.

Niagara Falls: Divers from the U.S coast guard took part this morning, in a delicate wreck recovery operation to bring to the surface a Nazisubmarine discovered two weeks ago at the bottom of Lake Ontario.
The U-boat was spotted for the first time by amateur scuba divers in late January and they had contacted the authorities. Archaeologists associated with Niagara University of and master divers from the U.S Coast Guard were mobilized on site to determine what it was, and they soon realized that they were dealing with a German submarine that sank during World War II.
A wreck recovery vessel of the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society was mandated to refloat the ship and bring it back to Niagara Falls, where it must be restored before becoming a museum ship. The delicate recovery operation took nearly 30 hours to complete, but the submarine was finally brought down on the bank with relative ease.

The submarine was identified as the UX-791, a unique experimental German submarine, based on the U-1200 model, and known to have participated in the “Battle of the St. Lawrence”. It was reported missing in 1943 and was believed to have been sunk near the Canadian coast.

Professor Mark Carpenter, who leads the team of archaeologists, believes that the U-boat could have traveled up the St-Lawrence River, all the way to the Great Lakes, where it intended to disturb the American economy.

A report from the dated from February 1943 suggests, that the ship could have attacked and destroyed three cargo ships and two fishing vessels, even damaging the USS Sable (IX-81), an aircraft carrier of the U.S. navy that was used for training in the Great Lakes, before finally being sunk by anti-sub grenades launched by a Canadian frigate.

“We have known for a long time that the Nazis had sent some of their U-boats in the St-Lawrence River, but this is the first proof that they actually reached the Great Lakes,” Professor Carpenter told reporters. “This could explain the mysterious ship disappearances that took place in the region in 1943, and the reported “Battle of Niagara Falls” which had always been dismissed as a collective hallucination caused by fear.”

The restoration of the submarine could take more than two years, but once completed, the museum ship is expected to become one of the major tourist attractions of the region.
