OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

Temporary housing in Groton
My hubby is headed for CT later this week and starts BESS soon. Our plan is to wait until after BESS to move our household goods, when the Navy will move us. For right now, all of our stuff except what I need on a daily basis (it all fits in our car) is sitting in a shipping container waiting in storage to be moved, and our son and I are staying with my parents. After seeing him for PIR and talking more about it, and after having spent 2 months here...I just need to be in my own space, and really don't want to spend 8+ more weeks without being able to see him. We are talking about still waiting to move our stuff, but finding some kind of temporary housing arrangement and having me come out as soon as he has off-base privileges. Then after BESS moving into base housing and having the Navy pay for our stuff to be shipped. I'm looking for information on options that might exist for temporary housing in or near Groton that would be doable on E-2 pay. We're already really good at living lean, but I would need some kind of kitchen facilities, a washer and dryer in the building (we cloth diaper...a laundromat is not a good option) and some furnishings although I'm sure we can cheaply obtain the necessities if it comes to that. We pretty much got rid of all furniture except our bed, anyway so we'd need to buy some things down the road anyway.
Ideas? Thoughts? Experiences?

There really aren't a lot of temp housing situations in Groton. At best you could stay in the Navy lodge or Gateway. But that gets costly fast. It usually takes then at least a month to get full off base privileges. They start on white card- he can't be in any cars, out of uniform or leave base. Yellow card- he can leave but only in uniform, he will have a set curfew( I think back by 10pm) Blue card- full off base privileges. Although I'm sure you want to be with your husband; it is best to wait it out. The time goes fast. We had 2 kids at the time and it was easier for him with us not there. They have a lot of things to learn and do. They have duty and school takes a lot of the day. Just have him prep everything by the end of BESS to get the PPO move done. We were there by the weekend after he graduated BESS. Also don't let them put you in Trident Park housing. Fight if you have to, you don't want to be over there.

That's kind of what we thought originally but honestly, I am tired of not being mistress of my own home. I love my family but constantly doing damage control with my toddler when my parents refuse to baby proof the house is getting really old really fast. Not being able to shop for and prepare the food I want to feed myself and my son is very frustrating. Being able to see him for maybe a few hours a week would be a bonus...but honestly getting out of my parents' house and into my own space is the most important thing for me...and if I'm going anywhere, I may as well go to CT.

There is no where that an E-2 could afford even if you were getting BAH for the area, unless you have savings or something you can dig into. The Navy Lodge is 70 bucks a night. The Chalet is 17 bucks a night BUT you have to have orders to get in and special approval from someone to let your family stay. I was told it was meant for service members only. You might have better luck locating temporary housing where you are currently at.
The only other thing I can suggest is either finding someone who is already in Groton that has an extra bedroom. This is what we ended up doing. It was a couple that had no kids and needed the extra money. We were there for about a month and paid her 500 bucks... Technically, it is against base housing rules but it was necessary for us to be there DH had just got back from a deployment and we were in the middle of a PCS and the house in Va was not going to be ready yet so we staid in Groton while waiting for our house in Va OR call Balfour Beatty and see if they will go ahead and put you in a house. They do rent to people other than military so I could see them renting to you without much of a problem. The only thing is I am 95% sure they would put you in Trident park and trident park is kinda iffy depending on which part you get.I want to say the rent at trident park is like 995 a month for everything in an unrenovated unit. It has been a couple years so it has probably want up. You would probably get a better house if you waited till you got orders to be there. -

MamaMiri- I'm in the exact same boat as you. I'm living with my parents right now with my 5 month old girl, and its great so far but i really want to be with my husband again. He wants us to be in the navy gateway suites when he gets more liberty, so hopefully it will work out. I hope you can find something too, i know being by your self with a young one is stressful. I hope he gets his next card soon so ya'll can be together

We decided we just need to wait it out. I mean, we *could* force the issue and manage to make money stretch enough for it, but it will be much less complicated and our bank account will be way happier if we just wait. For now we are just wearing Skype out! And we are definitely planning a visit for once he gets blue card, which he is confident he can get in the minimum amount of time (5 weeks, well 4 weeks now since he has been there a week now). Good luck to you, hope you find an option that works well for you!

I lived in Groton CT from May 2010 to Dec 2010 and also lived in Trident Park... :( I highly recommend you to try to get any other military housing other then trident park... We had alot of issues as in things breaking bugs no a/c funny heaters... We u get a house up in Groton try to get any other park besides them... I am so glad i am out of there... it was so horrible.. yes it was under BAH but i rather it been alot nicer and paid a lil more... Good luck if you have any questions about Groton area let me know i will try help u out... Red Roof Inn (hotel) in New London which is right over the big bridge is about 50 Dollars for military a night.. i think they also have weekly rates but i am not sure about that... its not a bad hotel at any means but is not as nice as naval lodge or the gateway inn...
