My son Matt arrived at Great Lakes on Monday evening. We received his box of clothes etc... Wednesday. We live in Highland Village, Texas. Matt is in Ship 2 Division 900 something. I can't remember right now. I am at work and do not have it with me.
My daughter left for Great Lakes on Tuesday. I receivedher last phone call that night at 11:40pm. I live in Katy, TX and would love to know if anyone else in the areas son or daughter started basic on Tuesday as well?
I think there are so many different paths, and I agree that we just have to pray that they make the right decisions for them. My daughter had been to college, was a certified teacher and had been teaching for a year when she and her husband both decided that they really wanted to do something more meaningful and made the choice to join the Navy. You just never know! They have been in for over 3 years and are very happy with their decisions.
Hi, Moms! We insisted that our son go to college and he did----for three years----at 3 colleges! He is almost half-way through after all that! He has been in NAVY for 7 years and is talking about going back to finish when he decides to get out. He has that decision to make later this year. He enjoys working on helicopters and he might could get a job back here in TX and go to school part time. All we as parents can do is pray for God to help him make the right decision and answer his questions and be there when and if we are asked. (hard for me since I am a former teacher and his mom! ) :)
Hello All, my son is doing well. We made him go to College for a semester but he came home before finals and received no credits. He does have 15 hours he earned during high school through the dual credit program. He got it in his head that he was joining the Navy and nothing we did would change his mind. He is now in A School and if he is high enough in his class he may be able to get a spot in C School. He is in San Antonio so we do get to see him now when we can get away from Odessa. Good luck to all. My son seems happy and is so glad he made this decision.
@huntersmom, my son left last week for BC and he is 25. He had an associates degree in mechanics and at about 23 changed his mind and wanted to be a cop. So, he decided that the Navy was the perfect way to do that. Get the training he needs and go to college when he gets out or during. As a teacher, college isn't for everyone right away. Some need to experience the world before. Good luck to him and you. The not communication has been hard for me but I've got to cut the cord sometime. I write everyday. Good luck.
Hello Huntersmom! We are in Lockhart. My grandson ships out for boot camp on July 26th. My future sailor has talked about the Navy for the past 3 years and decided to join the Reserves so he could get his degree in criminal justice with the GI Bill. He wanted to be a MA (Master of Arms) but was placed as an Intelligence Specialist. After learning about that field he is soooo excited! I will miss him terribly - even as a reservist his recruiter told us to plan for him to be gone 6 to 9 months. This is what he wants so I guess as grandparents and parents we just need to keep doing what we've done all along - help them be the best they can be by loving them and showing them where to get the tools and skills they need to be successful! The DEP group and Boot Camp group on the Navy4Mom website have a lot of really good information about how to prepare your sailor and yourself for their Navy career. Welcome to Texas Moms!
Hi Huntersmom!!! Welcome to N4M's. I am so proud of your son. Mine did PIR on 3/30. (We live just west of Austin) He went in at 18. If your son is like mine, college was not even an option. It was hard to go along with his decision, but he knew exactly what he wanted to do. I am very proud of him. He is doing great and already has a couple of college credits under his belt. If your son plays his cards right, he can have a degree by the time he gets out of the Navy or he may decide at that point to stay in...either way...he is a winner! Depending on what he has chosen to do in the Navy could be a great advantage for him when he gets out. God Bless him, and you. He will be fine. Our little boys grow up to be men. Praise God!!
