I stayed at the Ramada and it was great. They run several shuttles so if you miss one there is another. Shopped in the NEX while he went to get his stuff , thought we had missed it by the time we got out there but I called the desk and she reassured me another one was on the way. They were so nice and so many Navy families were there we just kind of bonded together. Was eating breakfast the day in the little dining room the day after and one of the moms offered to let me ride with them to Ohare to hang out with our boys until their flights. It was so nice..

The emotions aren't just on our side of those doors either.  Our sailors are out there knowing we are inside but they have to keep it together and not lose their bearing. Mine said guys were crying in line before the doors opened

I think towel! It starts the moment they start raising the big white door. Such excitement and pride in what you child/family member has accomplished. Best of luck.

I second Bremda Sue's suggestion of a shuttle it is so much quicker than driving to the base PIR morning and trying to get in. Best of luck in your journey

Hi Vickie, the 1st few weeks are hard because of the lack of communication but it does go by fast and before you know you are going to PIR - what an experience that is. During book camp our kids are so busy that I truly think it is harder on us than them. Make sure that you join your son's PIR group. That truly was a life saver for me as we all shared what little we knew and gave us a sense of what our children were going thru. Bet of luck and hang in there.

Pam Baily have you found the ships N4M's page? My son is on the USS Enterprise CVN 65 I dont know what I would do with out those ladies during deployment. Between this N4M's page & that one Im able to cope!!

We stayed at the Red Roof Inn because the Navy Lodge was full. It was less than a mile from the base. They will give you a list of hotels or at least they did us. The list they gave us also gave us a discount for staying with them.

Hey, ladies - sorry - but you have to get used to the no contact - it doesn't change after boot camp (always).  Sometimes it is better - and sometimes not!  My kid was trying to buy a house and he deployed on the same day he made an offer.  We tried to get a POA and the money transferred before they sent him on a mission.  We didn't make it because of MLK holiday!  I finally had to make the decison whether to buy the house or not because I had no contact with him.  I told the realtor today to let it go back (he got his earnest money back) - and about an hour later, he contacted me with an email account!  I still think (hope), I made the right decision for him.  He seems ok with it.

Where to stay - I stayed at the Navy Lodge!  Most important - are you listening????  Get a shuttle to PIR - it saves so much time!!!!

After PIR, you can drive your car onto base without too much problem with time.

Hi Pam! Thank you for your reasurance and encouragement. Yes, I really miss not being able to text or talk to him on the phone. I keep wondering what he is doing and how well he is holding up. Can you recommend any hotels for graduation? I can hardly wait to see him and how he has changed.
