Thanks BrendaSue for the update. I am relieved to hear that he has some family to help him through this very difficult time. I am sending him a card today but will wait to send any type of monetary contribution.

This car was flattened in a wreck on Interstate 10 in Arizona in a multi-vehicle accident. Three members of the Reynolds family, in another vehicle, were killed in the accident.
This picture has replaced Wendy Reynolds’ previous profile picture on her Facebook page, where members of the community have offered their condolences and consolations to the family. Pictured, from left, are Derrick, Wendy, Sean and Shane Reynolds.

Members of Reynolds family killed in horrific accident By Kim Cox kcox@etcnonline.com Longview News-Journal | 0 comments
The world shifted for the Reynolds family, Derrick, Wendy, Shane and Sean on Thursday morning last week, when three family members were killed in a fiery car crash on their way to see Sean’s ship dock in San Diego on Friday.
Proud parents Derrick and Wendy, and their younger son, Shane, were traveling through Arizona to see their oldest son, Petty Officer Sean Reynolds, come in for shore leave, when their vehicle impacted with a semi-truck on Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak, just down the road from the city of Eloy.
According to Scott Reynolds, Derrick’s brother, the family was going to greet their son after his ship docked, tour San Diego for a week, and then travel back to Pittsburg for some family time.
“He’d been out for seven or eight months, and was due to be in the next day,” Scott said.
According to Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves, the driver of an 18-wheeler lost control of his truck for unknown reasons and collided with the Reynolds’ vehicle, a 2009 Kia minivan, setting it on fire.
“Then the rig struck a small passenger car, injuring the passenger in the vehicle and then struck another 18-wheeler, injuring the driver,” Mr. Graves said.
The driver of the truck that crashed into the Reynolds’ vehicle died at the wheel.
Scott said everyone has been extremely supportive, from the Navy to Prieferts, where both Derek and Shane worked.
The Navy sent two friends with Sean,” his uncle said. “They volunteered to help Sean out. His boss, who lives in Plano, his captain, is going to take time out of his leave to come see Sean. The Navy has been really great.”
Prieferts also has supported the family during this time. The company sent the Priefert plane to the airport in Dallas to pick up Sean and his Navy buddies and bring them back to Pittsburg, Scott said.
Sean is doing his best to hold it together, Scott said.
“There are times it looks like he’s not holding up well,” Scott said. “It goes back and forth. He does better when he doesn’t have his mind on it.”
Kim (Reynolds) Mercer, a cousin of Derek and Scott, said the whole family was having a hard time of it.
“We’re all just trying to process it all,” she said. “It’s hard to process just one person, but for the whole family to be taken?”
Mrs. Mercer said everyone hears of stories about tragedies like this.
“But, it just doesn’t happen to your family,” she said.
Friends and family have shown their support in more ways than one. Wendy Reynolds’ profile picture on her Facebook page has been changed to a shot of the whole family, Sean in his Navy uniform, the rest of the family in shirts with ‘Navy’ on them. Posts include memories of the family and an outpouring of sympathy for Sean.
Stacy Carter posted on her wall just how much the Reynolds family meant to her.
Nine months before this tragedy, Mrs. Carter’s daughter, Courtney, was also killed in a car wreck. She and Sean were friends. The family has been there for her from that point on, she said.
“As we pulled up to the ER another vehicle pulled in right behind us,” she said in her post. ”Derrick, Wendy and Sean Reynolds walked into the ER right behind Cassie and I. I later learned that Shane was there but he stayed out in the car. He was too shaken to come inside.
“Derrick and Wendy sat with me at the ER all night, never leaving my side. They held my hand, hugged me and tried to soothe my fears as I desperately tried to find out information from the accident. For many hours they were by my side, with many others coming and going, they simply stayed and quietly held my hand.”
Mrs. Carter said she had known Derrick for 24 years. She met his wife Wendy at Movie Gallery, and later when she had a store downtown, but she really didn’t get to know the family until that night.
“In the days that followed they brought Sean by the house on his way to the airport. He was being called to duty and was not going to make the funeral,” she said. “They loved my Courtney, and they were there for me in my darkest hour. They are what you call 'good people.’”
The Reynolds’ younger son, Shane, dated Mrs. Carter’s younger daughter, Kimberly, for a while, and Wendy sent Mrs. Carter eggs from her hens to help with Mrs. Carter’s many food allergies.
“This family was a loving, caring family,” Mrs. Carter said. “Our family is here, Sean, for whatever you may need. If you just need a quiet place to fish or just sit in the pasture, we are here. If you need to escape and just hang out, our door is open. If you need a hug, there are many to be given. If you need a home cooked meal, those are here every day. If you need a bed to sleep in we have those too. If you need advice or have questions, what I don't know I can find out for you. Whatever you need we are here for you. We love you Sean as we love your family.”
A funeral date has not been set for the family, since the Arizona DPS has not officially identified the bodies, and so cannot release them to a funeral home, Scott said. He is working on getting the bodies released for a proper burial.
“I’m just trying to be there for everybody,” he said.
Right now, he is doing as much as he can for his nephew.
“Sean needs me, and that’s all that matters,” he said. “He leans on me for most of it, and I’m going to let him.”
