Wow - good information Julie; thanks for sharing.
My son recently graduated ASchool at PNAS and is waiting for his orders for his next duty station. His leave was approved to come home for 1 week; this weekend is his baby sister's high school gradaution...SO EXCITED!

My son just found out that he will be going to Hawaii so now  I have a ton of questions!

Will he still be able to live in the barracks or will he have to get an apartment? Can he still eat in the mess hall/galley/ whatever they call it:)? I'm afraid if he has to stat paying for all that he is in for a rude awakening as to how far his paycheck will go!

sbeechl, just a suggestion - start writing her now - number the letters and as soon as you have the address - send them off!  Letters from home it what helps them get through boot camp.

Brenda Sue, thank you for your words of kindness. She is air rescue swimmer. And I'm anxiously awaiting her box and address.

Donna, I guess they make a bigger deal of the homecoming than of the leaving.  But I am almost positive that you can be there for both.   They do "man the rails" for leaving also.  That is just a sight to behold!  I am so thankful I got to see a homecoming since my son isn't assigned to a ship.

Mayport, Florida?

Brenda Sue... Sam is coming home July 18th goes to Mayport on the 29th. Do families see their sailors off when they deploy? or is it that they just are in port when they return?

LOL! I am so stealing your post Brenda Sue! That is so true of those who move to TEXAS and weren't raised here!  I grew up with water coolers, screen doors and hand fans. If we were HOT we were told to go outside and run around for a little bit, then to go sit in the shade and we would cool off then. HAHAHA, give me the heat over the cold! Only ever lived in Florida (Hollywood) other than North Texas, would love to move to San Antonio!
