Congresswoman Kay Granger, 12th District of Texas

The USS FREEDOM (LCS-1) is the first in a new class of vessels called Littoral Combat Ships. The USS FORT WORTH (LCS-3), will be the third in this class.

Dear Friends,

Today, the Department of Defense announced the naming of the Navy's newest littoral combat ship, LCS-3, the USS FORT WORTH. The announcement comes nearly three years after citizens in our community began a grassroots effort to name the ship after the city in honor of Fort Worth’s rich military history.

I launched the USS FORT WORTH Ship Naming Commission in hopes of convincing Secretary of the Navy Donald Winter to honor our city by giving this ship our name, and the community responded, sending thousands of postcards to Secretary Winter requesting his help. Fort Worth has been home to ranger outposts, training facilities, airbases, and defense manufacturing, but never had a ship named for it until now.

Today, I’m happy to say that Secretary Winter has rewarded our grassroots efforts.

The littoral combat ship is a cutting-edge ship that is designed to allow access to shallow coastal waters for missions such as mine warfare, anti-submarine warfare and surface warfare. It will also be outfitted with reconfigurable payloads that can be changed out quickly to accommodate various missions.

The USS FORT WORTH will be designated LCS-3 and will be built by Lockheed Martin. It will be 378 feet in length, have a waterline beam of 57 feet, displace approximately 3,000 tons and will make speed in excess of 40 knots.

Currently, the USS FREEDOM (LCS-1) is the only littoral combat ship in service. Another ship, LCS-2, is being built and will be named the USS INDEPENDENCE. The vessels in the Freedom class are named after American mid-sized cities, small towns and communities.

I’d like to congratulate the city of Fort Worth for receiving this incredible honor and thank the Navy for recognizing and projecting our city's military heritage across the globe.

Sincerely,

Kay Granger

Derek was told to keep his receipts when he HAD to stay in the hotel room with me for three or four nights when he reported to his first duty station (they di dnot have a room on base) and we would be reimbursed. Well, that was last June and I have not seen any money. Now, Derek is not the type to pursue it either.

Louise, I am not real sure if Derek has had a sponsor. When he got to his first duty station, some girl kept coming by the hotel where we were staying and letting him follow her to the base. Now, was that a sponsor??? hahaha

From what I understand about travel: Let's say that your Sailor's first duty station is Japan. The Navy would buy one ticket - either from A school to home or home to Japan. If you could drive her to her duty station, I would think that the Navy would pay for her flight to an airport close to you and the station!!
Derek's first duty station was in Virginia right by his A school - so he did not get that flight. He had to pay to come home and then we drove his truck back to Virginia. He did not have to pay for his flight to Kuwait (I don't think). I don't mess too much with his money, although I can see his banking accounts.

Where is Josie's first duty station? Is she excited about being close to home?
I would have loved for Derek to be close - but I think he is enjoying Virginia. He just wishes he had his kayak and other things there.

There are places to go on base to get cheaper flight tickets. I am not sure, I would tell Josie to ask around!! When will she finish A school? She is in San Antonio, right?

Louise - I went and checked - Texas' Moms was created one year ago TODAY!!!
CCR joined on March 9th! Since I created the group I can go and tell everyone what day they joined Texas' Moms!!
It has been a roller coaster year both for me and my Sailor son!!

CCR is a hoot and the life of every get-together she has been to. She went to Kema, Beaumont, and Keller with me so far. She has brought her delightful husband to my home and I met her Sailor in Beaumont!! I hope to see her again - along with lots of you - in Waco in about two weeks!

Joni - thanks for sharing that link. I hope I never have to use it myself!!

Nope Cecelia - I am here until early Tuesday morning!! Wish I would have known - you could have hitched a ride. Actually, I am flying. Where are your sisters?? I may drive to Virginia this summer to see Derek.

Yea, there was an army girl killed in Iraq by a "boyfriend" who was stalking her. He just walked into her tent one night - told her bunkmate to please leave and he shot her.
Our faculty stood outside as her funeral procession passed. It was extremely sad. We did not find out until months later what happened. At first we were just told she was killed in Iraq. Everyone assumes that it is "war" related.
I wonder if those numbers are in on the "official" tally.

I believe that they are talking about going back to end-of-course exams for high school, at least. It does make sense, especially for the sciences. Biology is completly different and not related to chemistry or physics. The math tests could basically be the same as they are now. Maybe the geometry could more geometry based - but the algebra and TAKS are close.
I am not sure about the younger grades.
