Also about the OMB; I have never talk to them, but my sister got a call right after Sandy hit the coast. My sister is on my son's list as next of kin because there is just me and my son. But they called her to see if she was ok and needed anything. I sent my ex to two wars and never got a call like that, so that says something about the Commander of his boat.
This goes out to the mom's who's son have not got there dolphins yet. My son got his when they were out on there little boat ride (that what I call it). The commander sent me a letter telling me that he got it while there were out at sea. I also saw yall talking about half way; they make a big thing of half way with all kinds of things for the guys to do. The have raffles to make money for there Christmas party that they have every year. My son won a playstation 3 one year.
I asked my son about the half-way boxes, he said the ombudsman are in charge of that I said I want you to have one, he said the single guys get one from them. He said they can take one on if it fits in their sea bag.. so when he goes out this next time, he will take it on board and knows he has to wait until the halfway mark. Hmm.. should I let him know what is in there.. probably not, he may want to get into it sooner! Hope that helps :)
By the way donnab, I love your avatar - where was that photo taken?
donnab - I have been trying to figure that out too. I see other groups talking about all of the communication they have with their OMB, but it seems to depend on the sub and crew. I read about half-way packages, but it seems the only way that happens is through the OMB. Lin or danagagirl, have you ever sent half-way packages?
not sure Donna.. no one has ever contacted me.. I know my son gave them my cell and home #.. most of my information I get from my son
Does the OMB get in touch with us by numbers my son gave them or how would we contact them?
Sweet tea and made-to-order waffles? Sounds good to me! He also answered my question about mail, and said he has to get a PO Box. He wasn't able to get an email before he left either since "the guy in charge of that" is in the area that was just upgraded so he didn't have time before they left. Hopefully I will get that before he goes out again. He said it was like time stopped once they got on the sub and that he was surprised how much he noticed things like the grass and the wind when he got back. I can only imagine what it would be like being gone three months with little to no outside contact. I bet there is very little color on the subs too - grey metal compartments and everyone wearing blue or brown.
Navy Mom, your son might have worked with my son then, he is a CS on the Alaska blue crew :)
Hope everyone had a great weekend! I finally talked to my son on Friday night. He survived his first tour but was disappointed he didn't get more qualifications done. He only spent the first four days in the engine room and then was moved to food service where he said he was basically a bus boy. Ironic since the only job he had before the Navy was as a bus boy at Outback Steakhouse. He said "I've come full circle!". The next one should be better now that he has the fear of the unknown out of the way. I'm just happy to be able to communicate with him again:)
