I have heard from a lot of the communication on the Navy for Mom's site discussing how cold it is in the sleeping areas on the ships-are they allowed to have blankets from home?  Are they allowed to…Continue

I meant to tell you the picture I included was from his first homecoming on the Big E.  If you notice there are not 3700 other sailors around us.  He was one of the final few to finally leave the ship.  Took his time getting things together.  LOL.  Looking forward to the day.

When I've been on the pier in the past, there has been hot chocolate, donuts, coffee, available.  We were given flags and red white and blue pompoms.  I even got a Chuckie doll (Rug Rats Chuckie), I in turn gave to my sailor.  The pagentry of the ship coming in and having the families all there together is such a humbling and emotional experience.  At least it was for me.  We are staying near my son's house in Virginia Beach.

Any talk of homecoming?? I know we're not supposed to be date specific because of OPSEC, I hope this is "OK" . . . My family will be there, they're arriving the day before and staying at BEST WESTERN PLUS Holiday Sands Inn & Suites , I'll be arriving by "alternate" transportation!!!! Can't wait to see y'all on the pier!

I picked up a bunch of small hand-held American flags yesterday for the grandkids. We're going to get some posterboards and let them make signs.

Any other thoughts, recommendations/info about pierside events would be welcomed. I follow the "secure" family web, but there's nothing there??? We'll be staying around for a few days before heading home. Any suggestions or recommendations regarding things to do or places to visit AND restaurants would be appreciated!

I agree.  Not exactly sure when we will be arriving.  Depends on their schedule.  I remember from one of Greg's previously deployments when he was on the Big E.  There was a dinner the night before the Big E came in on the base for family.

Lucycat, Check out Molly's adopt a sailor web page or group.  You should find the answers you are looking for there.

You are very creative navyprincess!!  Very clever ideas!  I'm going shopping this weekend to see what I can find!  Thanks :)

I make "cakes in a jar" to send in some of my husband's packages. I too will send extras for my husband to share with those who do not get mail and the cakes in a jar seem to be the biggest hit! It keeps the cake fresh to be made that way. They also like fun little toys for them to play with. Don't send anything that can melt (ie, no chocolate!)- it can make a mess of the package! Hubby has been requesting health food lately so I have been making oatmeal and honey bars as well and wheat crackers, things like that. I also send a lot of pictures from home and letters in the packages- packages get there much more quickly than letters do it seems so it is faster to put them in the package, haha! I  try to theme my boxes if I have the time to decorate them- for example I sent a "Christmas in July" box and wrapped all of his goodies up and then included a Christmas tree that one of my artsy friends made out of poster board and painted- she attached little fake Christmas lights and ribbon as garland and then we sent along a package of stickers for the ornaments. He puts one sticker at the end of each week to mark the passing of deployment. I have a bigger version at home with stickers made out of pictures of us (all made by my friend- she is very creative!) and when they return the last thing that will go on the tree is a star that will mean he is home! He loves it and all of his friends are jealous- they've all asked if my friend can make one for them too! So I think they like little things like that to help them count the passing of time. I also did a "movie night" box where I put in a movie and popcorn and candy- I bought a second copy of the movie for me to have at home and it helped us feel connected to have a movie night where we both watched it at the same time :).

Thank you rareis13!  I will have to tell my son to let me know too.  This is his first time out so I'm new to this as well.  I think I have a lot to learn :)

I send packages about once per week. I also send to other sailors on the ship. My son helps with the surprise. He keeps an eye out for a sailor who hasn't received anything from home. I get the flat rate APO/FPO boxes. $12.95 to ship regardless of the weight. Delivery depends on where they are and how replenishments are being conducted. I sent two packages the same day; one to my son and one to another sailor. The other sailor received his, but my sailor's package arrived much later. Powder drink mix to mix is the water is a favorite in a care package, as is sunscreen and chapstick. I include ready cook meals, tuna in pouches, cookies, crackers, magazines, etc. I used to send $5 movies I picked up at the store, but this deployment he has a ton of movies downloaded on his computer. A specific request was beaded jump ropes and an ab wheel. Oh a small clip on fan has been a favorite on each deployment.

The ship address is on the main USS Anzio page. Or message me and I'll give it to you. You don't have to have a family sign in to get the information. Once you receive an email back from the page master you can log in the Ship's family website.

A great resource on Facebook is the Official USS Anzio page. They are very good about posting pictures of our sailors.

My son left yesterday with a group from Norfolk to join up with the Anzio.  This is his first time at sea.  What is best to send in the care packages?  Also, he is on his way, and will join up with the ship this week some time.  How soon can I log in to the website?  Any help would be greatly appreciated!
