Elaine, you are right about the ships address. The added division just makes the sorting process go faster.

As far as the berthing goes, yes they try and keep it separate but some of the marines and sailors berthing are right near eachother. They do not have them segregated simply because they're not a permanent member of the crew. My husband just switched berthings and now shares one with some Marines.

welcome Alimay108 and Diana to the group.    tell us what your LO on the ship does. just basics...no names required.

I've been told the address can be:

rate/rank lastname, first

ship with hull #

dept/work area or unit if you know it.

FPO, AP   zip + 4

but for years I only used the ship name/hull# and did not have the dept/area and son still got the mail.

melted is not necessarily bad...like Michelle said gives them a source of entertainment...kinda like the saying there isn't calories in cookie crumbs but they will eat them anyway. I've heard of people using popcorn as packing material to fill a box and they still ate it (or fed it to the dolphins)

@Michelle, not sure about the Marine/Navy berthing..from the tour of the ship I got last time they came back...there is berthing all over and I thought they tried to keep units together,  ..except for the females/males areas  But I could be wrong on the unit together part.

Thanks for the info everyone! I'm still trying to figure out how this thread works. @cheffiona, I am mailing him some chips ahoy cookies and I really hope they don't melt! They're his favorite. Also, some protein bars, beef jerky, goldfish crackers, microwave popcorn, gatorade packets, and multiple other things that slip my mind at the moment...lol! I hope everything arrives in one piece! @Michelle, I will ask him the next time I get an email from him! @Diana, Thanks so much!

And I also fear that the assortment of Easter goodies I mailed couple of weeks ago will also be a big blob lol
