Agreed Pam!!! Lee was sayin the same thing!! He's so pissed off!! If it were due to something else and he knew about it he'd have said one way or another. They're ridiculous.... I dunno. So long as they're all safe that's all that really matters to me. . . Blah.

Lol, yes Shirley I've been busy. They've got my schedule all weird at work. And I've only recently been able to make posts from work once again although it's been fairly busy for some reason.

And yes, everyone needs a facebook!!! I made Lee one even. He didn't have a choice. Lol

Hey ladies! It's the middle of the night here but I just got some news to share with y'all. Hubby just made a secret call (the brat.... But I'm glad he did) phones have been down a while & Internet is now also being turned off for an unsaid amount of time... For something that is already public knowledge! Stupid. Yeah. Goes hand n hand with whhat Shirley said down there. Soooo maybe they have their reason or maybe the ship is just being re-res as always. I dunno other than I'm irritated by their whole situation and I'll be much happier when they're all HOME. lol I just love my Navy... Why'd I join again?? Lol

alright ladies! Hope all is well. Julie-- I'm sure you'll hear from Brian soon. I'm sure they're just waiting for their next move. <3 Try and take it easy for now. :)

alright . It's back to bed for me!! :)

Julie- I'm sorry to hear about your son. I just want to let you know that the medical team in this squadron is excellent - at least that's what my LO has told me. In any case, I will definitely pray for your son's successful surgery and speedy recovery. I can just imagine the emotions that you are going through...we're here for you.

Thousands of lives? Maybe not. But thanks.

An informational video would be good. I know they're out there, the new ones cover how easily our electronic communications can be monitored. My old training first taught us anti-espionage guidelines, how even giving someone an unclassified list of phone numbers was the first step to being implicated in spying.

If you signed up for newsletters and aren't getting them, call the ombudsman. She is friendly and accessible. That's the Navy one, I don't know the Marine one.

I completely agree with Anti M... thank you for this reminder...and for some of us, this "lesson" on what we should be doing. This is the first deployment my LO and I are going through...we're newbies and everything I learned about the navy life, especially about OPSEC and communications in general, I learned from this site. I am so grateful for those who are experienced and take the time to guide newbies like me. (Such as Anti M) Yes, sometimes we learn the hard way, but it shouldn't be that way. The military should really have a video/ guide for families that spells out what to do and not what to do and the possible implications of our actions. Maybe there is such a guide / video- it should be more readily available or promoted. I think that families should be trained about these sensitive things at the same time our LO's are accepted into this military world. We really shouldn't have to learn the hard way because even the unintentional mistakes can put our LOs in so much danger. For myself, being a family member of a sailor, I know that I will start taking more initiative to really sit down and learn all of what is expected of me. I will make this my personal mission... to learn everything I can about what new families should know, confirm the information learned from the powers that be and be active in ensuring that other newbies have clarity and guidance. THANK YOU Anti M... you may have just saved thousands of lives.

I treasure every e-mail I get from my son and certainly don't want anything to jeopordize that!! We are all members of the Navy and as such, are entrusted to keep our armed forces safe.

I may have had the training, but that doesn't mean I'd decide to pass on info. For those who think they're being helpful, who trained you on security matters? No one. The info passed to the families is for the families, not for the rest of us.
Comment by Anti M on August 7, 2010 at 11:47am
Wait a minute, am I reading what I think I am reading? There is a Dubuque mom who gets emails when others do not.... and you want to set it up so we all get them? Seriously? Is this what I am reading?

That's what the ombudsman is for. She is cleared, and the families on her contact lists are cleared. The SAILORS choose who gets the information, not the moms. Period. WE are not authorized to have such information passed to us, much less in mass communication form. You don't know who is on here. Anyone with evil intent could certainly fake a profile and a sailor.

Ships go silent ALL the time. Every ship, every deployment, almost 100%. Sailors at sea are often out of touch. This is the Navy, not summer camp. No one should be freaking out over normal operating procedure.

If there is anything to worry about you'll make sure we know ASAP? Sure, and who else? Emails aren't secure, not by a long shot. Neither is phone communication. I did this stuff in the Navy, I know how easily our communications here can be monitored. You just announced you're going to be a prime source of information. Congratulations.

You really don't grasp OPSEC. It is bigger than talking about deployments. It is not passing information, even that which seems innocent, to unknown or unsecure sources. Called Need to Know. I don't need to know where the Dubuque is. I know they are at sea, busy,m secure, and protecting us. The least we can do is return the favor.

Go ahead and scream at me. I don't mind.
