It looks like they had a great July 4th celebration and sendoff. I am trying to figure out how to buy a copy of the newspaper.

Katies wrote that....We had a parade today of American Cars. It was cool. I was on duty but they had me go on it anyways. It was fun. The car I was in was 63 Thunderbird, white with green flames.

Katie has plans for horseback riding, hopefully that will work out for her.

I'm so sorry Julie. Try not to live your kids pain. Just remember they learn more from the things that go wrong in their life. It builds character for adults and helps them appreciate all the good things in their life. "Like their moms". I know it is one of the hardest things for us to watch our child be unhappy. I have had lots of practice. He knows he has a family back home that will always be there for him and we are all here for you. Good luck to your sister. I will say a prayer for her. She needs you the most now. Be STRONG.
A long time ago when things where going really badly for my son and I didn't think I could take anymore a nun stopped me and gave me words that I have drawn strength from. "God never give you more than you can handle, he seems to have a high opinion of you right now."

After I e-mailed Katie and told her about the Mom's who mentioned their sons could find any guys to hang out with who WERE NOT interested in just going to the bars and picking up women, this is what she had to say....

Well I'm glad there are some half-way decent guys on my boat, guess I
still haven't met them. Cause I know a lot of guys are going and looking
for girls and not so much the pretty views.
I really wish I could have found someone to go to the Reef with, I have
a feeling I'm going to regret it and also never have a chance to come
back. I may have to save up and come back if I ever get the chance. It
is so pretty from what I have seen.

Katie is about done with her cranking duties. She is in the laundry. Water is on reserve, so the laundry is piling up! Don't know what those officers will do w/o clean uniforms and pressed tablecloths in their dining hall.

Katie hadn't had the opportunity to wear her dress whites either because of the timing, so she tried them on before leaving for Japan just so I could have a picture.

I looked thru all the pictures that someone gave us to the Carins online newspaper. Most of the faces of the USS Essex they posted were Marines. I don't think any of the sailors were sons/daughters of this group. It was nice to see so many pictures of the ship.

OK. My son sent me an email asking me to pick out a nice Australian wine for his girlfriends birthday. He did ask me if I wanted any wine first. Any suggestions?

"g'day first mate" This is so cool. I am very excited for all out sailors. I saw pictures of the local people waiting for the essex to dock. You would think they where us.
