Jonathan lost his plug for his computer so he can't use skype until he orders a new one. He phoned me again this week so I am thrilled. It only took a year but I guess my guilt trip worked and he has promised to phone me regularily. Jonathan is a big video gamer too. He bought special glasses in Thailand and I just had to verify an order from Gamestop for him for 7 new games. He is also a big reader. I have been sending over used books (mostly sci fi) for the book exchange on the ship. People at work have been giving them to me.

Katie was having trouble with her .mil e-mail for a while. She could receive, not send or reply. I was temporarily still using her sbc acct from home, but that one she could only get to at certain times. I heard from her yesterday before she went on liberty. Katie has called every Saturday night about 11 pm from a friend's land-line phone.

Hi everyone. I had an email from the ombudsman of the Essex. It is for online bookings for travel to their next deployment. I don't want to post details here and it is for military families. If you want me to forward any of the information send me an email. It tells you the cities they will be in. It does not tell the exact dates. If your sailor hasn't told you.. its on the internet. If you want to go, I am sure your sailor can book the hotel for you. They suggest you get the insurance because military plans always change.

We usually find ourselves watching the National Memorial Day Concert on PBS hosted by Gary Sinise. They always have some very touching memories and honors for those currently serving.

Blessings to you and yours as you remember those who have served and those currently serving...especially OUR sailors.

He has never been a talker. As a matter of fact he doesn't communicate much at all. I have gotten small emails from him and he was home for New Years. I think the guilt trip I put on him for forgetting Mothers Day helped. I also got pictures of him and his girlfriend last week. We mothers can be so tricky!

My son phoned me for the first time since he got there over a year ago. It was 5:00 am here, but I didn't care. He was surprised at how excited I was to hear from him and promised to phone again soon.

Katie said that right now there are only about 25 females on the ship while in port - the rest are living on base. When they leave there will be about 150 females. I read on the USS Essex Navy site, or just the navy site, that there are typically 1,200 sailors and 1,800 marines when they are underway and fully manned.

Thanks for posting pictures Ingrid

This is cool too. It is recent pictures of their spring patrol. http://www.navy.mil/local/view_photos.asp?id=325 Do a "search" of your sailors name and see if there is a picture of them. I found a picture of my son dated December 4, 2008. He was thrilled when I saved the picture and emailed it to him. Now to get him to email me pictures......LOL

Ingrid, I added your pictures of the ship to my facebook. I think I have gotten more information from you than I have gotten from my son in the last year. Thanks.

I think it is more of a bragging rights thing that guys like to do. My other sons probably know more about it from him than me.
