My son did it last year but he didn't tell me much about it. Something to do with getting their eyes sprayed and having run a course? He was vague and I don't remember much. I would love to hear the whole story.

Katie arrived in Sasebo on April 25. Instead of starting out doing her rate - DC - she was told she would be on scullery duty for 3 months first - everyone does it at some time - at least that was what she was told. Anyway, today's e-mail said she was now switched to laundry duty. Four days of officer uniforms and 1 day of tablecloths for the special dining rooms. Katie is fine with it. At the end of the e-mail she said she was off to hang out with friends;) The first package I sent took a week to get to her.

I'm happy with e-mails. Katie doesn't have a phone.

That's great Lorraine. My youngest is graduating from high school in June also.

Katie called Tuesday AM from Okinawa. She sounded great. Asked me to send her some civilian clothes. She's doing her 'scullery' duty for 3 months right off the bat. Katie says she hasn't taken any pics yet. The call was only about 10 minutes...but I would have been happy with even 2 mins.

Ingrid - Great pics. I set one of the ship as my background on my computer. Looking forward to seeing what pics Katie might send.

Great picture Ingrid! Thanks for sharing. Certainly looks like he is enjoying his job. Haven't heard from Katie since they flew her to meet the ship. I sent her a letter Friday. We'll see how long it takes to catch up with her.

I got an email this morning. He just got off duty. Midnight to him. He sounded lonely and asked if I could get his brothers, cousins and friends to email him. I guess it has been a long trip.

Welcome (again) Cindi.
There is alot of information in this site and the Japan site.
Let me try to hit the top points:
- what Tina said
- get a passport
- get a parents name to answer questions on his credit card, etc
- inform his credit card that he is moving out of the country.
- get to know the airport layouts (they are online)
- there is a DOD contact at all airports. Ask any information for D-O-D. If his sponsor doesn't make it, they will point him to the shuttle to base.
- have at least 10,000 yen on him. ($1.00 = 100 yen)
- read this site: http://www.essex.navy.mil/default.aspx
What does you son do? I think I am supposed to ask What is your sons rate?
Someone please correct me.
