I sent my son an email this morning that contained alot of love and support and questions about his passport, cell phone and packages. I just received a return email. It said "Hi mom!!!" grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. But I love him.

I sent my son a package three weeks ago and I haven't heard. I am trying to send one every month. Last time he got it right away. I heard they wait and ship packages when they have a load. Has anyone heard if they have gotten a delivery recently?

Ladies -

Please do not post what city the ship is stationed at. Keep OPSEC in mind when discussing locations and also dates of ship movements!! I've edited the group description. This is for your sailors' safety!

Thank you!

Kim from Tennessee: we are all here for you. We know exactly how it feels.
Julie: spring must be in the air on the Essex. My son also has a new girlfriend. Her name is Kayo. Jonathan didn't date until after high school also. He went to a small (85 kids) high school that was far away. I assumed they where away since I stopped hearing from Jonathan. Hmmmmmm! He has Skype but has never used it. I am going to deposit money in his account today and email him that it is for a phone card to call me. Julie, is there anyway you can get Kyle to bop him on the head and tell him to call his mother? She misses him!

Things that I have learned recently:
The airport that they fly into/out of is Fukuoka. This airport closes at night and opens at 6:00 am. My son had a 7:30 flight and had to sleep outside the night before. He wasn't alone.
My cell is t-mobile. If you call them with the IMEA number they will unlock your phone. Then in Japan they can buy a pay-as-you go SIM card. I am sure other services will do it if you ask. You will need a GMS phone.

The best place to get foreign currency is at the airport but check their hours. The banks charge high fees. I was in Tokyo airport in November. They have currency exchange, ATMs, showers and pay lounges. My son missed his connection on his way back after Christmas. His plane had mechanical problems and arrived too late for his flight to Fukuoka. It wasn't Tokyo but it was open 24 hours and he found a place to sleep. Here is the website for Tokyo airport: http://www.narita-airport.jp/en/

Welcome Kim. My son has been in the navy for 2 1/2 years and on the Essex for one year. You seem to know more than me. Here is what I read: In essex.navy.mill click on essex family. This is the web page for the ombudsman. I am confused with the wording. It looks like you send them an email to get on the mailing list. "Please contact us to have your name added to the mailing list" I am not sure if the email listed is for emergencies or to be put on the mailing list. I was asking if anyone on this site has tried it.

I have a question.
Have any of you had your name added to the mailing list? I just found out there is a ship ombudsman for each ship who is our contact for emergencies. The website said to contact them to have your name added to the mailing list. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to send an email.
