Hi all,

First let me say thanks for having this site! I appreciate all the feedback, tips and good wishes from each of you to each other (I have been viewing the conversations/discussions for a couple days now). I am not sure how the process works once he gets to Japan so I have a few questions (which may have been addressed already at some point) so please bear with me :)

1. I know the USS GW is currently deployed so how will the new sailors get to their ship? Or will they wait for the ship's return to port?

2. What is the best route for getting a phone/phone service that will be budget friendly for my sailor?

3. How will leave work? I know it will be a while before he has enough leave to come home but is it feasible to expect a yearly visit?

Again, thank you for the opportunity to be a part of a group that understands the fears, frustration and pride of being a Navy mom.

Hope all your sailors are healthy and happy!

Hello JGMOM

My son has been onboard for almost 3 years now, and we have seen him 2 times since. Usually for a carrier the sailor will be flown out to the ship when the ship is in a close range..  My son had to do that, but that's a thrill!. He can call home for free from the ship, they have telephones right on board now. Also they can call home from the base REC center, no worries there. You may contact me anytime for any questions,I am retired Navy my self.  So pretty much Know all the ends and outs.

Here is a welcome aboard packet for you, just click on the link.

It has all important numbers and information about the ship.

Wow, you made my day!!! Thank you, Timbosmom! Stress level is now 90, was 100 :) I really do appreciate it!

JGMom - What wonderful info!  I know this has been helpful.  I remember trying to get my hands and eyes on any related information.  My son has been on the GW almost 3 yrs also!  I hope you have seen the pictures/etc. recently on facebook.  This is how I stay "connected" to my son's world!  In response to your  question about phones - your son will learn about this pretty quickly - LOL!  I understand IPhones and certain apps allow for free texting, etc.  I am unable to provide any real info because my son is a "man of few words"!  I have learned - mostly from other Moms and reading!  We have only seen our son one time!  This was because he "had to borrow leave and go into the hole".  This was due to finishing Nuke school during the holidays and the report date to the GW.  Anyhoo - I think alot of sailors do come home more!  They do earn enough leave annually.  Please thank your son for his service to our country.

Timbosmom - Thank you for your service and now for your sons!  I know you must be so proud!  And thank you for sharing.

Thanks, kathy! Yes, I have seen the pictures on facebook and I am soooo happy for the sailors that they are now in port...hopefully they can get some much needed R&R or at least call home. My sailor is a 'man of few words' also...just received an email saying he made it to Japan and will call soon - I am happy with any correspondence from him.

I will always be a concerned parent but, BOY am I a proud mom...two kids, one in college and one in the Navy...I have the best of both worlds! God bless airmens and freshmen! :)

Again, thanks for the support! Hugs to all the sailors out there!

Welcome to the group!  Everything you've been told so far we've all had to learn about.  Congratulations to your son!  My sailor says he works hard and looks forward to down time.  Just sent some cookies!  It will take a minute for him to get acclimated.  Look for the first call to be early in the morning our time.  It works out to be a day ahead of US time, depending on what time zone you're in.  I'm Central Time.  Once again, WELCOME!!

Thanks, Raberta! Glad to be here :)
