Awh, what a sweet message you received BeachBunny. I haven't heard anything from my sailor in a couple of days. Hopefully he receives his goodie box soon.

Joshmom- our Sailor was able to take us on board to show us around. There is a huge bust of George Washington off to one side in the hanger bay and down near the galley is a 9/11 memorial with a large piece of steel from one of the towers. So awesome you'll be there in VA.

BeachBunny-thank you for your stories and pictures.

This is the picture I was looking for, I got side tracked by the zoom, zoom pictures....This is the bunks our sailors are sleeping in, they are 3 high. They have a privacy curtain, don't waste your money on the after market curtain, unless your sailor ask for one. As items get stolen and if anything is in the pockets, they will fail inspection....behind the handsome sailor are the lockers for hanging their uniforms...

The next picture is their storage area, a small space to lock up items and store them...they love packages but not too much stuff at one time, that they have to store....my sailor being on a squadron shares the tea, snacks and can keep stuff in their lounge and shop area, not all have an area... the briefing room has coffee so they don't have to go to the galley but starbucks is in the galley...:))

Some berthing rooms, bunks, are really warm, like the ones right under the catapult or flight deck...they may only use a sheet, no blanket. They are issued sheets, pillow and blanket. Mine brings is own soft silky sheet set. I shipped him a mattress pad, even the cheap $10 one is better then nothing. I pack it in a "space bag", suck the air out of it, put a note it, "open with care and stand back", he just throws it away after deployment. No need for him to carry it on or off the carrier...even sent a cool memory foam pillow for Christmas last year using the space bag...he'll use a sleeping bag on dettachments, easier to make the bunk before going  to work....

Hangar bay changed to the F&F day, my sailor said, wow where did all this stuff come from...it happened over night...

ok, it's posting, love the stream picture of the catapult, right after launching and the sailor getting ready to launch another bird....I was standing right on the flight deck, behind the yellow line...lol

Well, I over slept this morning, some of you might be dressed for the day....Remember to wear red on Friday: include family, co-worker and friends...wear red necklace, shirts, lipstick shoes( my favorite) show support to those deployed!

Have you been to a Fleet Week event?? They host events all over the US...ships, displays, mock temp hospitals, tanks, air shows so cool....and the Blue Angels zooming, the Navy leap frogs parachuting over head... last year I took my, ordered him a Navy Grandpa shirts, wore my Navy Mom shirt, we had a blast!!!

If your in SD, there's an older smaller carrier USS Midway, that's a museum, it's fun to explore it too...

Do you watch the tv show the Last Ship? I do but I just really look around the ship, so many things are not exactly how the Navy does it but that's ok....notice the "hatch" on the carrier, the doorways all over, those are so they can close off areas incase of fire, water, etc....well am so short I didn't have to 'duck' to go thru them. The walk ways are pretty tight, really only one way. I even went up in the tower, looking down on the flight deck. Well, I got pretty good at running down the ladders( steep stairs), as my sailor took us the same way to everything...being on a squadron he only knew his areas...I have some pictures..

Do you have the Navy app on your phone?? This app is cool, you'll get any critical alerts of important new Navy news, great photos of the day, weekly video of what they do out there, some pilots have blogs, current Navy news....do a search on the app search an an iphone or driod....really cool stuff.....

Funny, when my sailor was on the USS Carl Vinson for the long deployment. I saw the Tiger cruise was happening, he said NO bc he wanted off in Australia and if I signed up he'd be on the boat 3 more weeks...spoil sport!!

When we went on F&F day, we had plenty of notice as, we all had to pass security clearance. I snuck my hubbies ID from his wallet to copy, sent in the application, my sailors paid our $10 on the boat, it was my hubbies birthday called his boss and got a couple days off, he was getting dressed for work, told him to dress comfy that I got him his birthday off, had suitcases hiding in the back of the car, ice chest loaded with snacks, my daughter was hiding in the back seat...we got in the car started driving south, ok, 8 hours south....he didn't know what I had planned, told him to roll with it...after awhile, he thought we were just going to SD, the next day, he went for a bike ride with my daughter I went to the base and picked up our sailor, they thought I was at the beach...had our sailor 'hiding' in the hotel room for when they got back from the bike ride...then my sailor told them, we're going on the carrier for the day!!! It was so fun, and I pulled it off, hubby didn't know they were back from RIMPAC and in port...:))

Beach Bunny- I love your stories and please tell more. Yep I am jealous, I would love to see the ship. I am going to Virginia when the ship comes in poet and I don't want to miss any events or tours.
Comment by MaggieMay on September 18, 2015 at 10:04am

Ok I'm really jealous!!!  I want to see the ship!  I'm going to Virginia when the ship comes in.  Do they normally give tours when they come in or are the sailors allowed to take family on board and show us around?  I'm excited about seeing it but going on board would be icing on the cake!

BeachBunny - I wasn't aware of the "back-up" landing strip but that explains why when they left Australia my son told me not to bother sending packages bc they only had a few fly days and probably wouldn't get mail for quite a while.  I sent one anyway and sure enough he didn't get it till the last week they were in San Diego!  argh!!    Love your stories!

Have a great day everyone!
