janis, is your daughter not on the ship right now? i wasn't aware they were in port somewhere?

Got an email from daughter a few hours ago. She said everything's fine, and everyone is okay. She tried to find an internet cafe, but couldn't find one there, or I would have heard from her sooner. The 'interuption in service' could be the reason, since she was searching for a cafe. She said they all have been really busy the past several days, as well.

thank you mollie...and everyone else who enjoyed the pics! it really was a gorgeous country and VERY CLEAN! there are fines for everything! they even sell souvenirs that read "singapore: the fine city". haha.

anyways, i'm not sure if any of you read a few weeks back, there was an article about the cooks on the gw who prepare homemade waffles for our sailors on sunday mornings. well, i mentioned this to a few of the gw sailors saying "wow, it sounds like you guys are fed really good!" and they had a look of shock because they say it is completely untrue! :( they said that article was a big fat lie and they never get waffles...but they wished they would. i know it is a small detail, not even an issue, but it made me a little sad for some reason. i don't know...it is 2:20 a.m right now and why am i thinking about this? who knows? maybe i need some sleep. :) signing off for the night. sweet dreams everyone!

Wow abc...what awesome pics. So glad everything worked out for your visit. Having to wait 7 hours after a 20 hour flight must have been AWFUL!! But hopefully it was worth it all when you got to see him :>)
I am a "Nana" also, gotta agree, it's SO much easier than being "Mom". I've got 2 little cutie pie granddaughters, age 3 and 1. My son an his wife live about 2 1/2 hours away, so we get to see them pretty regularly.
I think someones comment about a possible interuption in email service might have been right, cause we didn't get any either for several days while they were in port. It could also have just been that 1/2 of the crew was on "liberty", so the other half was working their butts off while they were on duty (even more so than usual).
The "kiddie" toys that I put in Kelcie's care packages actually usually wind up being a BIG hit :>) I just get a couple of silly things from the Dollar Store and throw them in for fun. I've sent squirt guns, red wax lips, color crayons and coloring books etc. Not once have I gotten a "WTF" response :>)

Oh wow, what a beautiful statue! And the monks hanging out at the beach is so funny! What a gorgeous place. Thankyou so much for the pics. :)

Carolina, In the latest e-mail from the GW Ombudsman announcing that verbal notification would be given in Japan, she said,

"As per CAPT Lausman, we are not allowed to pass along this information by phone or e-mail. Please remember that as family members we are trusted with sensitive port information. Please do not discuss specific port information over the phone, post it on the internet or e-mail it to anyone."

Now I interpret this as it is not to be e-mailed to anyone or given over the phone, not only do not post it. Does this give "unfair" advantage to those living in Japan? Yes but remember there is nothing sacred on the Internet and messages can be intercepted. These stringent rules are for the benefit/safety of our Sailors.

abc, the pictures are fantastic! Many thanks for sharing them with us. I love the vivid colors of the market place.

When I thought I was going to Alaska, our travel agent recommended CSA. On a quick read through of there coverage, it appears that they cover 100 percent of out of pocket expenses. It seems you have to purchase a "cancel for any reason" rider because most of the reasons are accident and medical related.

Janis, Hats off to your daughter. I think that working in the galley has to be one of the most thankless jobs on the ship. Everyone is quick to complain about the food and few ever stop to give a compliment. On not getting e-mail ... sometimes it is difficult for a sailor to get access to a computer.

When you are on Facebook, search for the George Washington site. You can see some great pictures there. I was so thrilled to find my g'daughter's picture on evening.

Enjoy your granddaughter. She will grow up incredibly fast!

Hi grandma, thankyou for the quick reply. I know, she tells me there are times where she is so exhausted, that she can barely make it to her bunk before she falls asleep, lol. But of course, I still worry.

I just joined on Facebook. I believe it's the correct one. I couldn't find a direct link to it on this site, so I just basically did a 'copy/paste' of this forums title in their search bar, and it popped up.

By the way, I am a grandmother, too. A three year old little girl. :)

Hi everyone! I'm new to this site. I have a daughter on this huge ship. I haven't heard from her in about 4/5 days, but I know she's so busy. She does try, though. Navy Ma, my daughter is also working in the galley.
