kathy16...look above for a couple good discussions regarding the Navy Lodge and the other about Visitor Pass with form to fill out and phone number. 30days before for booking hotel and call direct to Japan...not the 800 number. Tickets were thru AAA and bought 5 months ago...under $700 round trip. Yes excited and leave early next week!

I just googled it and it was in Okinawa (an island by itself) which is south of where our ship is at. That is all I really could put together. Hope this helps a little bit. Sorry I can't provide more info.

Navy Ma...thanks for the link!

TriziaLee...a lot of the moms use the Magic Jack on here. If you scroll back you can read some of the comments. One mom (sorry I don't remember who) actually gives you a break down of what you need to buy and send. Good luck with that.

We got a SKYPE call this morning from our sailor. It was so fun laughing (all 3 of us) at the same time seeing each other :) We talked about the upcoming trip and the base pass situation while staying at the Navy Lodge. 10 more long days till we leave! I don't think the time can go by fast enough! LOL

Thanks for the info on Verizon and Skype. I have ATT with no data but may change when my granddaughter goes to Japan.

I have a MAC with a built in webcam. Its great. I had an iMac but it got so it would do some of the things I wanted to do. My SIL has it now and loves it. I have never installed Windows and see no need to do so, even though most of the people with whom I interact have Windows.

This is a test. I have not seen any posts to the "comment wall" since 2.4.10 by Ginny. Just want to see if no one is posting or something is wrong.

Well, I went back about 20 pages and picked up some good information about cell phones. I also went back to the beginning (p. 423) and read forward about 75 pages. Picked up more good information. I have been copying and pasting into a text file and will have to spend time distilling it.

I have a question about Magic Jack. Someone mentioned using it to call friends and family. Is it free only Magic Jack to Magic Jack or free Magic Jack to a US number? My granddaughter has a Maine phone number but it is a Bangor number. I am getting killed with phone charges when I call her. We have an Interstate plan which is actually less per minute out of state than the per minute charge in state. I'm thinking I could get that and practice calling while she is still in Whidby.

For those of you who are on Facebook, I have a favor to ask. I belong to a N4M group, Heads at Ease, and we make pillowcases for deployed military, primarily sailors. We have entered a contest with J and O Fabric and could win $50 which would really help support our project. If you could go to:

http://www.facebook.com/JandOFabrics?v=app_20678178440&ref=ts

and vote for Option R: Sue Lamberson, we would really appreciate it. I think you can vote once a day. We are running neck to neck with a quilt.

My brother was stationed in Japan when his youngest was born and his other two were just entering grade school. Matt, the younger of the two in school, fell in love with Japan and announced he would return when he grew up. While in college he did study abroad there for a year, met a Japanese young lady and married her. They have in Japan but are currently stateside. He is an airline pilot and hopes one day to fly for JAL. He is also bi-lingual as are his children.

I do have a question: Several of you have mentioned cell phones. I have friends on other groups who have said that a cell phone can be exceedingly expensive. I have also heard horror stories of $700 phone bills. We were thinking that Skype might be a good way to go. What do others do to contact with your sailors?

Thanks for the welcome. I am sure she will enjoy it. I had to laugh when she received her orders. Her dream list was for stations on the east coast and all she read at first was Whidby. A little later we get a call and she says, "Oops, I read a bit more and it says Japan!" She was a little upset and I reminded her that she had indicated when she entered the Navy that she wanted international travel. She said "Yes, but I was thinking Italy."

I've been reading about the thefts and that is definitely discouraging. I suspect it is the same on all ships. I am definitely interested in what others are doing to minimize risks. She is in the market for a laptop now, I recommended that she get a lockdown cable. At least then she could put it around her waist in case she fell asleep while working on it. I also found some interesting software by Absolute. While it may not prevent theft, it might help find and catch the thief.

I look forward to getting to knowing all of you and to learning about what to expect.
