Moms just got a update this am on our mail situation. Below is a excerpt of the e-mail I just received. ~ Karla

Postal Note

Due to our upcoming transit, we will not be able to receive or dispatch any mail from 26 -29 July.

Commencing on 24 July, we will discontinue routing our mail through Australia and will be back to normal postal operations.

Please remind your friends, family and dependents who normally utilize the U. S. Postal System during this period.

Sorry, FRG Family Readiness Group. Before being a "Navy Mom" I was active duty Navy myself (yeah thats my bootcamp picture on my posts) as well as a Navy Wife. My GW sailor was born in Portsmouth Naval Hospital (funny story... when the GW was in the shipyards in Portsmouth the guys use to ask him where he was from his response was only a gesture to the Naval Hospital across the way)

I have to say it was "Navy Mom of 2" that has provided the great information on the boxes :) Thanks to her.

Karyn, below is a copy of the original e-mail that I received from the FRG

Postal Note
as long as mail is routed through Australia (whichever is longest), no food, seeds, nuts, fruit, wood products, plants, or plant products are allowed to be mailed to or from the ship, as they pose a potential risk to Australia.

We have an agreement with the Australian Government to ensure no such items will transport through their country. This is especially important because some of these prohibited items are easily obtainable on-board.

When mail routing discontinues through Australia a notice will be sent out that we are back to normal operations.

Please remind your friends, family and dependents who normally utilize the U. S. Postal System during this period.

Ringtone's Mom,
I joined the FRG back when the GW was still in Portsmouth/Norfolk. I think there is a link on the GW website. Send them a e-mail requesting to be added to the FRG they will contact your sailor for permission/sponsorship to join. It's a great way to keep up with what is going on on the base and the ship.

Hi Moms,
below is a copy of the e-mail I received. Hopefully it will answer all of our questions regarding boxes to our kids. ~ Karla

Maam,

The worse case scenario is that the prohibited items will be removed from the PKG and the rest of the items will be sent to the addressee on GW.
FYI, custom officials in Australia are only checking randomly, and I have seen lots of PKG’s arrive with candy and food etc…
We will be back to normal mailing operations on 26 July.

FRG Family Readiness Group...don't know about the email end of your question.

Kat...when my son goes on deployment (he is a submariner) he always had to fill out a Power of Attorney appointing me to handle things in his absence. This was done thru the Navy and all the predeployment stuff. If you have such a document I would take that with me to the Cricket office.

forgot to add.... the info I posted earlier was an excerpt of an e-mail I received today from the GW's FRG. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks Michele. As far as what to do in the meantime, I'm sorry I don't have any answers. The e-mail said they would send out a notice when the mail went back to normal operations. I will send the FRG an e-mail and see if I can get some more details. I'll get back to you when I get a response.

Sorry.
