Thomas' mom...what a wonderful email you got :)

My husband finally got a call from his son this morning. I was not home. It was more a Hi, can't talk long, oh they are calling me, bye, I'll call from the boat.

But at least it was a call :)

Mine has a weight problem too. Has lost over 25. He gained so much when he was home on leave for a month. I guess there are a lot of sailors they are trying to whip into shape.

Lynda (Sarah's MOM)...Great. You tell your daughter we are all rooting for her. How great is that to say my daughter is on the Navy basketball team!!!

Navy Mom of 2...I too am so sorry for what you are going thru. We are going thru the same thing. I posted further down., My son Jimmy is on a submarine and he lost his Gramma a few days ago and was denied leave also. It is their job and the Navy depends on each and every one of them. I know this does not help but I too am at a loss of what to say to make sense of it. Mine on a sub underway is a little easier to follow their logic but still...I did not have to "hear:" my son's cries like you did. I'm so sorry.

Hi Moms sorry I haven't been posting in awhile. I writing because I have no one else to turn to at this time who would understand. Sunday May 31 my son's grandmother was taken away. We knew it was coming but still it doesn't make it any easier. Sent numerous e-mails to my son to call home so that we could tell him. Finally got to speak to him Tuesday night. As expected he is quite upset, he and his "gram" were VERY close. Timothy wants to come home for the service on June 15. Well, we sent the official Red Cross notification letter and the contacted the GW. GW command sent back confirmation that they informed Timothy. He put in his emergency leave chit and it was denied. (has leave time on the books) GW's reason the were going to be underway and he would miss to much time.

Now that I have written a novel, how do I console my son who is so many miles away. (hardest thing I think we have had to face) listening to him cry on the phone is so upsetting. He and his Gram had a tradition that he would call when the ship pulled out and then call again when it pulled back in to tell her he was safe. He asked me told me today " Mom, I won't get to call her when we pull back in" my heart broke.

sorry for rambling but I knew you moms would know what to do or say.

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the kind words. Glad Millye was able to make it home.

Hi all. I've been reading the comments about what Millye is going thru. I thought I would let you know my experience first hand as of this morning. My son is on a submarine (step-son on GW) and is currently underwater. His Grandmother passed away yesterday. We notified Red Cross. They notified boat and Captain and COB informed my son this morning. He was able to make one call to Fiancee to tell her he will NOT be able to come home but hopefully will be able to call Dad and Aunt when they surface to take on people. Grandmother is not considered immediate family.

So I guess it all depends on type of boat, what they are doing, if they can be spared and many more things when it comes to making a decision of whether the sailor can come home.

It is ok...he is doing is job. I just hope he is able to call his Dad :(
