Choose your Username.  For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either).  Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username.  While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Make sure to read our Community Guidelines and this Navy Operations Security (OPSEC) checklist - loose lips sink ships!

Join groups!  Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself!  Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind.  In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships."  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility. 

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.  

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

Cindy, how wonderful of you to "adopt" :-)  Your post -- and generosity -- brought a little welling-up in *my* eyes.  I'm usually pretty salty (and I don't mean tearful) but it's just such a blessing to your daughter and her friend to have your support.

I got the most wonderful email from my sailor yesterday, it just brought tears to my eyes!  She received her Valentine box and loved it.  I have also "adopted" another sailor on the ship and will continue to send to both of my girls.  Wendy, this is my first deployment and I'm doing just as you did.  I'm contantly following where they are or might be!  Good for you that you got to "chat"!  Hope everyone has a great day!

I'm finding lots of fun stuff at 99-cents stores and the Target dollar-spot.  Little things to fill up the flat-rate boxes, like air freshener ("ocean" scent as a joke) and adhesive lint-roller.  I'm craving sugar reading Christine's list!  :-)  I'd like to receive *that* care package...

Let me echo ThanksMom a bit.  Sites like N4M are great except for the fact that when folks share their happy tidings, sometimes that sets other family members up for comparisons about why our respective sailors didn't call/e-mail us as often or as quickly.  If you can try to view postings about contact from any sailor as verification that the crew is safe, then perhaps that will help a bit. 

 

Also, try to remember that every relationship is different.  Every division varies in terms of how fast its members are able to get in queue for the phone/internet.  Every sailor is unique about when/how often contact with home is helpful.  17-hours' time difference further complicates phone contact. Theirs is a tough lifestyle, 24/7.  I know there are times when my sailor could call home earlier but he'd have been more tense and less chatty so he waits until his own mood is improved so that it can be a happier conversation. 

 

After nearly 2-decades of deployments, I can state unequivocally that:

Sailors do best when they know that communication from them to home is a bright spot in our lives AND when they know that gaps in communication do not create doom-and-gloom for their loved ones. 

 

So my advice is to talk oneself into a good mood (easier advised than accomplished, I realize) so that your conversation with your sailor will be all about you two and less about "what took you so long to call me?" 


Just think...we're more than 2-months closer to Homecoming than we were on 30 NOV!

Got a phone call this morning - all is well.  It's amazing how hearing a loved ones voice can make the entire day wonderful!

Thank you so much for the information!  I'm in Washington state and just can't go to the meetings! lol  It does make me feel better knowing that what I am going through is "normal".  I'm sure learning lots with this being her first deployment!

Dear All~

 

My understanding is that there have been some technical issues with e-mail (my guess would be limited band-width or disruptions with satellite availability). 


At the recent FRG meeting, the prospective XO spent a few minutes talking with families and since many of you are not in a position to be present at these gatherings, I thought it might be helpful to share his main points:

It is completely normal for communications to abruptly cease.

It is completely understandable for family members to become alarmed when "routine" communication is interrupted or changed.

Please know that your Ombudsman is available to provide whatever information is official.  That is what she's there for :-) and she is very happy to serve GRIDLEY families.  Her e-mail is ussgridley@gmail.com .

 

I doubt it will be any consolation, but I haven't seen an e-mail in several days and word I have heard is that several people's phone calls (2-days ago, maybe?) were dropped mid-sentence.

So, hang in there, everyone!!  :-)  It's still so much better than the "old days" before e-mail, internet and Sailor Phone.
