I'm sending my package today. I'm numbering my packages and writing the date on the bottom of the box. That way we can gauge how long it is taking for them to recieve goodies!

My sailor said not to count on him receiving anything I'd send until "January-ish" so I think your gouge sounds reasonable.

Here's a link on this very site with lots of ideas about care packages: http://www.navyformoms.com/group/carepackageideas

I would highly encourage sending your sailor with his/her Christmas parcel as mail delivery is likely to be "spotty" at best until January.

Packaging materials. The United States Postal Service will send -- to your door -- everything you'd need to ship for free (although you'll need to affix postage when you mail). It is called the "Mili-Kit" and includes a variety of sizes of flat-rate supplies, some of which may be discounted for delivery to FPO and APO addresses. To order, call 1-800-610-8734 (Package Supply) and Choose your language (1 is English, 2 is Spanish). Then choose option 1 (it states it is for Express Mail service, Priority Mail or Global Express Guaranteed). When you reach a live agent, request CAREKIT04. Current contents include 2 each of 3 different sizes of flat-rate boxes, customs forms, envelopes for forms, address labels and Priority Mail tape. Keep in mind that it's way easier to list the contents for customs as you pack and before you seal the parcel tight! If sending to a forward-deployed land unit, it helps to package everything in ziplock baggies. Dust and sand get into everything!

What *not* to send. Keep in mind that PG-13 or tamer is a good rule-of-thumb for packages relayed through sensitive ports. Alcohol as well as sharp or dangerous items are also no-no's. Of course, it's probably best to read and re-read and read one more time before sending upsetting or negative news.

My daughter is down in Pensacola, Fl in Navy A school. she has just received verbal orders stating that she will be stationed on the USS Gridley, but we don't know when that will be yet. Any insight what is in store for her? Does she bring her car, does the navy get her from Pensacola to San Diego or will she get to come home first (north carolina) This is all new to me and very overwhelming! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
