B'sNukeMom- Thank you for the information. Our son has been able to e-mail us and purchased a calling card on the ship (the ones he purchased at Walmart did not work). I'm glad to have found this website. I try to stay away from the drama of social media, and only joined Facebook when my son went to bootcamp, just to be able to have some information and support. However, I could not find a specific moms page for the Truman. Military life is all new to us, so we are learning as we go. The posts on this sight have been welcoming, positive, and helpful. Thank you!

Jacobmom - have a great time in Norfolk (I know you will!!!).  Make the best of that day ;-D.  So sorry to hear about his friends dad passing - sounds like this young man has been through a lot and still has a lot on his plate.  Prayers for him as he figures everything out.

Hi All!

Heading to Norfolk on Friday for a big sailor hug! We will only get to see our sailor one full day because his duty day was changed and we are unable to change our travel plans. He’s in need of an extra big mom hug as his best friends father passed away and he is upset he is unable to be here to support his buddy.  His friend has been through so much in his life and my son has been one of his biggest supporters.  His greatest desire was to join the military but was unable to due to having plates in his feet for flat feet. He tried every branch. Recruiters would tell him no problem, send him to MEPS and he’d be disappointed. Over the past year we are beginning to see God has other plans for him. He will most likely be raising his 5 year old niece as his sister, who helped raised him has AIDS and not doing well. His mother died of AIDS when he was only 6. The sister got it from mom at birth. They are a very close family as you can imagine

They are not allowed to use their cell phones while deployed unless they are in port. My sailor used good old fashion email and calling cards.  He recently switched his cell phone plan to T mobile.  T mobile offers great military discounts and international calls are included in the price!

steelfans5 - you had asked about contacting your sailor while on deployment - there is an app called "WhatsApp" that is a popular messenger service to use.  I'm sure others will chime in with what they have used. (My son has been out a couple years now so I'm not as up to date.)  And they can buy calling cards in the NEX or on the ship - Ship to Shore cards.  I have info on them posted up above in the "Truman Deployment - 2018".

Jo 4 Bama,

Did we ever tell you about what we do on the weekends? We invite sailors over to our home and give them a place to hang out. On Saturdays we get together from 5-9 and we eat together and play board games. On Sundays we get together from 1-5 for a family style dinner and we do various activities. We'd like to invite your son to join us. :) We can pm you our cell # or with his permission we can contact him . Let us know.

Jo 4 Bama,

We sent a package to two sailors while they were out and they just received them the end of last week, so I'm assuming that you can use the same address. Hope that helps!

I can’t find my post about address to send package to my son while Truman is home. Do any of the moms know if we continue to use the address while they were out? Thanks!
