PCilla, are you on the Ombudsman and FRG lists?  Best bet is to join their Facebook pages, and ask questions of the Ombudsman Team for the most accurate info (you can email them, too).  Time off will depend on your sailor's situation and he/she will be your best source for that.

As far as tips, plan ahead as much as you can!  Southwest Airlines flies into Norfolk, has great rates, no fees for bags and if plans change, no change fees (though flight prices may change).  Book your rental car early too, as rates there jump when the demand is high. The Navy Lodge is closest to the base but gets filled up; Hampton Inn on Hampton Blvd is the next closest.  Bring a welcome-home banner or sign, you'll feel left out of the fun if you don't!  :)  Make your own (many do, on poster board) or order from buildasign.com (inexpensive if you order early, shipping goes up when you need it sooner).  http://www.buildasign.com/Troops

Hi all! Just a few questions, since this is our first deployment. I know theres still no exact date or anything but I live in Florida. So how should I go about travel plans? Any advice? tips? Do they get any time off when they return? or is it business as usual the day after homecoming?

Just a reminder that we all need to be observing OPSEC right now - especially on Facebook and other social media.  Make no mention of rumors, operations, ship movements, dates.  Be sure your sailors secure their pages as well and that everyone understands the potential consequences.  From the U.S. Navy:  20 Tips for Keeping Safe and Staying Out of Trouble Online.

This is a fun fundraiser by the FRG - you buy a square (one day in one month), decorate it with an appropriate message about your sailor or the ship that's supportive, and the calendar is displayed on the ship!  Ask the FRG for more details.  I'll PM you  a link to more info, too :)

Quiet here!  How is everyone doing?  Tomorrow we're mailing 58 care packages from Arizona to the ship, what a month this has been!  Massachusetts mailed 42 packages, and we're counting up the rest.  Lots of treats headed to the sailors on the Iwo Jima!
