Trisha, good for her! What a dramatic way to start her turn on the Iwo :)
Monmmelt, the Iwo Jima is an amphibious assault warship with extensive medical capability with over 1,000 sailors and can carry double that amount of Marines. Are you on the Ombudsman's and Fleet Readiness Group's lists? You can email them with questions and keep up to date on their Facebook pages. On Facebook, you have to make a Friend request and give your relationship to your sailor, his rate (rank, i.e. E3) and rating (job, i.e. CS). Communications with the ship depend on a lot of variables - where they are and what they're doing, what kind of access your sailor has to computers, and so on, so don't be discouraged if you don't get in touch right away. Care packages are wonderful to shop for, pack and send; if you need help figuring out that system, let us know & we'll help. It's easy, use priority-mail flat rate boxes (there's a large size marked especially for military FPO/APO addresses, and you get a small discount), plus there's an easy customs form to complete.
There are two Discussions at the top of this group with information about the ship, and about how to contact the Ombudsman Team and the FRG.
Two more NavyforMoms groups you would like are these (here are the links):
Norfolk Sailors - Families and Friends and
Both are full of good and fun people who will help you get a feel for you son's ship and where the Iwo, and he, are based when not deployed.
Anyone out there who is willing to teach me more about the ship my son is on would be greatly appreciated. Are we allowed to contact eachother on facebook? I am trying to learn this site it's all new to me.
He has been part of a Fleet Surgical Team for the past two years, and they have been attached to the Kearsarge and the Iwo.
@Carla, sent you back a PM :)
Welcome Trisha-Ashley'sMom (and fellow Arizonan) and Julietaylor40!
There are definitely worse places to "hurry up and wait" than Norfolk in the summertime! Hopefully she's checking out the area and having fun. See if she's been to the beach at the Little Creek base, private and nice. The Iwo has a great medical department, she'll enjoy it - once the waiting is over :)
Julie, what does your sailor do?
Just call or email Pat (the gal who owns the company). She is super nice, knows the ships and will tell you which to get I think I got the split pack 7' but double check with her. Tell her Marcy said Hi, she and I were talking about other stuff just last week :)

Thanks for the tips Marcy! I just started getting some items to send. I'm definitely ordering a navy rack pack for him but what details to I need to tell them? How do i know what size he will need? I want to order it so it will get to him as soon as possible.
Carla, I"m co-admin, you can PM me.
Hi, I have a question about the 'cruise' but I am not sure who the administrator for the group is so I can PM her.
Welcome new members Pcilla, mtomlin13, and donnermcc :) That makes sixteen new members in 2012!
