Today (February 19) marks the start of the Battle of Iwo Jima, fought Feb 19 - March 26, 1945.  The American invasion was charged with capturing the airfields on the island for the purpose of refueling warplanes.

The fighting marked some of the fiercest of World War II.  6,800 Americans gave their lives; of the 21,000 Japanese, 20,000 died.

The Medal of Honor is our country's highest military honor.  During the two-month battle, 27 medals were awarded:  22 to Marines and five to sailors, of whom four were Hospital Corpsmen.  To put this in perspective, the total represents over 25% of the 82 Medals of Honor awarded to Marines in the entirety of World War II.

Of the extraordinary effort and sacrifice by our Marines and sailors, Admiral Chester Nimitz said, "Among the Americans who served on Iwo Island, uncommon valor was a common virtue."

Good morning Navy moms, my son reported to Mayport last night as he has orders for Iwo Jima, how does this work since the ship is deployed, and how long until he meets the ship. Hope it's not a silly question, sorry and thank you

Hi moms,

Heads at Ease has set the 1st wave for shipping pillowcases on 2-9 thru 2-11.  If any of you sew, would like to donate fabric to the sewers or $ for shipping, please let me know.  We always welcome help from the families of the ship's crew.

Kim, I just got an email back from Pat Neleski - she's been  "up to her eyeballs" with installing a new embroidery machine and training a new employee, and she promises that she's catching up with calls tonight; yay!

Comment by Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom on January 26, 2015 at 5:51pm

Kim!  First of all, asking questions is NEVER a bother, it's what we're all about here!  (That, and chatting about our sailors and everything else LOL) Usually she responds right away.  I called and got the voicemail as well.  I sent her an email and will let you know as soon as I hear from her, and hopefully she'll get back to you soon too.  Regarding delivery, they do ship directly to the ship's FPO address, and the curtains for the Iwo are a standard size so they should go out right away - once you can get through and order the right size, that is  :)
