Marcy, honestly I don't know what "strand" stands for. I just know that it's more of a "hands on application"  of training in the field he is going into. Mine is currently welding. The BECC was more book learning and Strand is the application and hands on stuff. LOL

Lynne, Thanks so much for the welcome!  I am excited to be here. I know that my son was kind of hoping to be closer to home, but he is so glad that there is an OPENING for him. He'd rather be on a ship than on hold. LOL

Well THAT sent me to Google!  LOL

HT = Hull Technician, BECC = Basic Engineering Core Course and a strand = job specific training?  Or does strand mean a specialty?

Marcy--He's in HT school, just finished BECC and is currently in STRAND.

Marine--It's nice to meet you.....both of you and thanks so much for the welcome. How incredibly exciting for your kids. What an honor, to represent the Navy during Fleet Week!

I just found out my son will be assigned to the USS Iwo Jima after A school. So folks, I guess you'll be seeing a bit of me around here. Hello to all!

Can you imagine the excitement they feel?  Maybe a tenth of what I feel when I see them :)  "Manning the rails" = "tissue alert" for me...

Good morning all!  Glad some got to visit Fleet Week New York, and the photos are just great.  My son was in NYC for the weekend and visited the ships, though he had to drive to get there LOL  After three years in the Navy, he has so many friends all over that there's always an invite for a place to stay and fun things going on.  Many of our corpsman parents have their corpsmen in Afghanistan and so don't know much about the 'ship' side of the Navy.  One of our dads got to see the Iwo, and he was so impressed!  Just missed connecting with my son, too bad, could have had a personal tour!

Hey, here's something to be aware of that happened to another LHD in May:  Gossip Shuts Down Bataan's Facebook Page (NavyTimes.com)

"Loose tweets sink fleets, and as sailors and Marines aboard the amphibious assault ship Bataan learned, unchecked gossip can bring down a command’s Facebook page."

You know me too well Gloria but this one I didn't, I swear!

NMCP = Naval Medical Center Portsmouth :)  Gloria knows this, but for anyone else...my sailor's not permanently assigned to the Iwo, but is a member of a Fleet Surgical Team (doctors, nurses, corpsmen) that was on the Iwo for Operation Continuing Promise 2010.  I wish so much they could have gone to NYC, but they're all doing their shore-duty turns at the hospital.
