My LO planned to come home this summer to meet her new niece/nephew.  Not sure if that's going to happen now.  This does suck!   The good part of being underway is that she can get more quals done for her SWO pin.  I'm trying to see the bright side.  It's not really working yet.

Iwo Jima ombudsman:  http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001529013591

You will need to make a "friend" request, and provide your sailor's name, rank and rating, and your relationship.

My son is a member of a Fleet Surgical Team, so when the ship is in its home port he works at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth - a beautiful hospital set on the Elizabeth River across from downtown Norfolk's waterfront. There's a very active N4M group of corpsman moms & dads; many of my friends there have loved ones in what we call the Sandbox, or coming or going at any given time. In fact, in that group we like using first names, makes it easier/nicer, so Marine-Navy Mom may I ask yours?

An important date to commemorate:

On 23 Feb 1945, the US Flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima. As the first flag raised was small, a second, more visible flag was ordered. Despite raising the flag, enemy resistance was felt for the next few weeks and the island would not be secured until March 16. The abundant heroism of the US Marines and Sailors in the Battle for Iwo Jima was recognized by the award of no fewer than twenty-seven Medals of Honor, more than half given posthumously. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz famously described the invasion as one where "uncommon valor was a common virtue.”

Lynn & Marine-Navy Mom, I just posted some stuff above in a new discussion "USS Iwo Jima info."  There are two pdf's: one with specs, background etc, the other a news story that describes the Iwo Jima's capabilities, very interesting, just to give you an overview of your sailors' new home.

Here's a photo from the Christmas Ball -

You're right, it's exciting time for sure!  The FRG and ombudsman may want to wait till she's definitely out of school and on the ship, but why not contact them now anyway, they'll let you know.

And don't feel overwhelmed, everyone is here to share what they know and figure all this stuff out together, so never hesitate to ask questions  :)  Just learning the Navy acronyms is a job in itself!

Welcome Lynn & Marine-Navy Mom, & congratulations to you and your sailors! The Iwo Jima is SUCH an impressive ship. You should have seen their Christmas Ball at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, oh my, unbelievable. Lots of good things in store for your sailors! :)

MNM, I don't know the answer to that. Be sure to get in touch with the ombudsman for the Iwo & give them your contact info, & join the Family Readiness Group (FRG), see the first discussion above. Both are good resources for info now & during deployments. Hopefully you can be there for your daughter's first homecoming, an amazing experience!

Hi everyone, just checking in too  :)

The Iwo Jima will be in Pensacola in May for Aviation Week May 2-8. Event will feature the arrival of the USS Iwo Jima at the Pensacola Naval Air Station and a special performance by the Pensacola-based Blue Angels as well as other military aviation units.

And how great that they'll be in New York again for Fleet Week this summer!

Woo Hoo! Coming home soon. I won't be able to go on the Tiger cruise or to homecoming, but just to hear my daughter's voice again will be good enough.
