Iwo Jima ombudsman: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001529013591
You will need to make a "friend" request, and provide your sailor's name, rank and rating, and your relationship.
An important date to commemorate:
On 23 Feb 1945, the US Flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi, Iwo Jima. As the first flag raised was small, a second, more visible flag was ordered. Despite raising the flag, enemy resistance was felt for the next few weeks and the island would not be secured until March 16. The abundant heroism of the US Marines and Sailors in the Battle for Iwo Jima was recognized by the award of no fewer than twenty-seven Medals of Honor, more than half given posthumously. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz famously described the invasion as one where "uncommon valor was a common virtue.”
Lynn & Marine-Navy Mom, I just posted some stuff above in a new discussion "USS Iwo Jima info." There are two pdf's: one with specs, background etc, the other a news story that describes the Iwo Jima's capabilities, very interesting, just to give you an overview of your sailors' new home.

You're right, it's exciting time for sure! The FRG and ombudsman may want to wait till she's definitely out of school and on the ship, but why not contact them now anyway, they'll let you know.
And don't feel overwhelmed, everyone is here to share what they know and figure all this stuff out together, so never hesitate to ask questions :) Just learning the Navy acronyms is a job in itself!
Hi everyone, just checking in too :)
The Iwo Jima will be in Pensacola in May for Aviation Week May 2-8. Event will feature the arrival of the USS Iwo Jima at the Pensacola Naval Air Station and a special performance by the Pensacola-based Blue Angels as well as other military aviation units.
And how great that they'll be in New York again for Fleet Week this summer!
