Charlene, I don't think there's a definitive answer; I'd send it anyway, as long as there's nothing of real value, just 'care package' treats etc.

The whole thing is exciting, no matter what she's doing, so good for her! I bet you hear from her pretty soon...my fingers are crossed!

Marcy, she told me on the phone that because she just got to the ship that she didn't get to have any liberty and she would be doing alot of cleaning and alot of time spent on watch. She wasn't to happy about that! She was so excited to get to Costa Rica and spend time sight seeing and getting to know everyone, on a side note, she was very excited to get on the ship and get to doing what she was trained to do!! I still have not heard from her...I really wonder when I will :(

Tara, got your email and just sent you the mailing info. Wow, what an intro to the Navy she's had, very cool! And just in time for their three days' R&R, how smart of her LOL ;)

Thank you everyone for the warm welcome!! My daughter, Sonya left for bootcamp march 23rd, from there she went to A-School in Pensacola, then she was home for almost 2 fabulous weeks and then left for VA. She was there for almost a month waiting for her passport and they flew her to Costa Rica to meet up with the ship. That was last Sunday. So as you can see this is VERY new to us. Every question I asked before she left about this deployment she didn't have an answer to LOL I did get a call from her from the ship phone the day she arrived but she didn't know when she would be able to call again :(
She is an ABH and she did tell me during this cruise she would be working in the hanger. Thank you all for the information!

Unfortunately, according to the FRG, no one really knows for sure about the mail drops. Frustrating I know! If it's something of value, I'd think about holding off, and just send him a box of treats or whatever that won't be missed if it doesn't make it.
My son bought his AT&T card at the NEX in Norfolk prior to leaving. I think you can get them in the ship store.

Hi Tara! My son is using an At&T ship-to-shore card when not using the line Darla mentioned. Cost is $40 and he re-loads it on the ship. I think she can buy one in the ship's store.
I've sent several packages and he's received them all. Don't delay if you're going to send her a care package! If you PM me your email address I'll send you a page I wrote up on how to send a care package and fill out the customs form (all easy).
Are you on Facebook? There is a page for the Iwo Jima Family Readiness Group (FRG) entitled "Iwo Jima frg" - http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000632116618. You have to request to join - give them your sailor's name, rank, rate and your relationship and they will confirm you.
There's also a page for the Iwo Jima Ombudsman: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001529013591
I can send you the ombudsman's email address, too, so you can confirm the mailing address for your daughter.
The Family Readiness Group is planning an amazing homecoming for the ship when it returns, if you're able to attend!

Hi Tara, welcome to our group! We're happy to have you (and your daughter). I don't have much experience as this is my daughter's first deployment, too. She joined the ship 2 days before she sailed. You probably won't get too many phone calls as service is not reliable and calls are very expensive. She may be able to use her cell phone when the ship gets closer to the US shore. I get regular emails, but my daughter is an officer. I don't know if that is different for enlisted. If you Google USS Iwo Jima, you can find the ship's official page. The mailing address is there. My daughter told me not to send anything as they weren't going to have many mail drops this cruise. Other mom's may have more info. Lisa
