For the privacy and safety of you and/or your sailor, NO LAST NAMES ARE ALLOWED, even if your last name differs from that of your sailor (please make sure your URL address does not include your last name either). Also, please do not include your email address in your user name. Go to "Settings" above to set your Username. While there, complete your Profile so you can post and share photos and videos of your Sailor and share stories with other moms!

Join groups! Browse for groups for your PIR date, your sailor's occupational specialty, "A" school, assigned ship, homeport city, your own city or state, and a myriad of other interests. Jump in and introduce yourself! Start making friends that can last a lifetime.

OPSEC - Navy Operations Security

Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.

DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.

DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

You can email the gal who owns the company, Pat Neleski, at pat@navyrackpacks.com or call her at 855-722-5722 to be sure you're ordering the right size.

A lot of them get a lightweight, thin mattress toppers (the egg-crate type or memory foam) it's just their preference if they want one or not. He might want a lightweight blanket and a stick-on LED light for his rack, too. Other things include a combination lock and shower shoes. Might even add a little laundry soap so he's not dependent on the ship store right off the bat - Purex 3 in One Sheets are lightweight and can't spill :)

I am happy to say that Heads at Ease pillowcase project has been in contact with the ship and we have committed to mailing pillowcases to the entire ship, plus the Marines, while they are deployed this year.

It looks like mid Feb into March before we will begin, as we are mailing to the USS Comstock this month. We mail in waves until they are done.

If you would like to help with the sewing, fabric donations or shipping $ donations, let me know.

Comment by Marcy ~ Corpsman Mom on January 10, 2015 at 2:39pm: This awesome video is a three-minute, time-lapse experience of a day in the life "from reveille to taps" of USS Kearsarge (LHD-3) which is essentially identical to USS Iwo Jima. Very cool to watch and see what it's really like!!

During deployment on their time off they can watch movies and TV, read, play games, work out, study for advancement exams and ship qualification boards (enlisted surface warfare and air surface warfare "quals") and hopefully opt to take college classes too :) And underway they get their mail and care packages from home. (Keep in mind that internet access is limited, so don't expect a lot contact that way.) Fortunately the time at sea is broken up with interesting port calls. There are also occasional activities like "steel beach picnics" which are big barbecues held on the deck of the ship. Hope that bit of info, and this video, help you visualize life at sea! :)

Can anyone tell me are there any fun activities on the ship for the sailors to do.do they have much time off to themselves or do they work like 16 hour days?

Comment by Nangirl44 on January 3, 2015 at 9:54am: There is limited space onboard. as to what he should take, & what needs storage, he should check in with his chief. They get them prepared pretty well & can answer those questions. My son had furniture that had to be put in storage (he is paying for it,) I believe) near his base before he left. There are videos on "youtube" that show what life is like aboard a Navy ship. He should make sure the ship's ombudsman knows who you are and has your email. There are various ombudsman depending on what his job will be & dept. Your sailor will know & can connect you to the right one.
