USS MAKIN ISLAND CARE PACKAGE GUIDELINES

Make sure you have complete ‘return’ and ‘to’ addresses on your box. The ship’s mailing address is as follows:

RATE/RANK/FULL NAME
DEPT ____ / DIV____
USS Makin Island (LHD–8)
FPO AP 96672-1601

Remember, one incorrect number could send your care package somewhere other than the ship.
Only put the addresses on one side of the box. When you put the address on more than one side you run the risk of having the package handled up side down and possibly returned to sender for postage.
Also, fill them out like a regular envelope with your ‘Return’ address in the upper left hand corner and the ‘To’ address in the bottom right hand corner of the box. If you have a separate shipping label, follow the format used on the label.
Do not use ‘SAN DIEGO, CA’ as part of the ship’s address. Yes, we are home ported in San Diego, but as a mobile unit, we have our own Fleet Post Office (FPO) address and ZIP+4. If you use San diego, the box will go there instead of our operating area and could be returned to sender.
Use a box that conforms to the contents you are sending. Make sure the weight of the box is evenly distributed, and the size and thickness of the box matches your contents and will hold properly. If any portion of the box sags or is easily depressed, you will want to put some more packing material on the inside such as crumpled newspaper, bubble wrap, or air tubes.
When wrapping the outside of the box, any tape except masking or scotch tape is authorized for use. Regular scotch tape and masking tape are not pressure sensitive and do not hold well under weight, and extreme heat or dampness. Excess markings or print should be crossed out or covered to prevent your box from being missent.
If you are sending personal hygiene items such as deodorant, lotion, shampoo etc., it is ideal to wrap those items in a T-shirt or plastic bag in case of leakage or puncturing. When that happens, not only does it ruin the contents of your care package, but it can also ruin the other boxes inside the mailbag as well.
If you are sending cookies, chips, baked goods and other perishable items, place them in Tupperware/Gladware or some type of plastic outer covering. This helps prevent breakage and spilling of contents and keeps other items sanitary.
Do not send sodas or other drinks of any kind in your package. Carbonated drinks run the risk of exploding during shipment due to shaking and other elements. Any open food or drink items pose a sanitary risk.
If you are shipping valuable items (i.e. DVD’s, games, jewelry etc.), it is a good idea to purchase insurance from your local post office. The cost of insurance will vary depending on the declared value of the contents of the package being mailed. Keep all receipts associated with the contents and mailing of the package in case of damage or loss, so you can file a claim. Proof of value and the Insured receipt will be needed for a claim.
Put a copy of the ‘To’ and ‘Return’ addresses and pertinent contact info inside the box just in case it gets damaged in transit and/or the outside becomes illegible.

Following these simple guidelines will help your care package get to the loved one it is intended to in a timely manner. Keep in mind your one package will be bagged and handled with many others, and could be exposed to heat and other elements during shipping. The better you pack and wrap your ‘package’, the more ‘care’ your loved one will receive with it. Please send any questions or comments to HYPERLINK "mailto:poolert@lhd8.navy.mil" poolert@lhd8.navy.mil and I will answer them promptly.

Respectfully,
Ship’s Postal Petty Officer
