Well my son is still sitting in a hotel in Bahrain, the ship wasn't there last Wednesday like he thought so he didn't miss it. There are 5 of them 2 for USS Ponce and 3 for USS Carter Hall waiting to go to their ships. There isn't a galley or USO on that base they are having to pay for everything and get reimbursed. Friday, I think, they were told to stay inside because of the rioting but it's better now. There is a street right beside the hotel that has American restaurants, so they are getting familiar food. He can't call to much because even with the calling card the hotel is charging him. I hope the banner doesn't beat him to the ship and he never gets to see our messages.
My grandson arrived in Norfolk yesterday, supposed to go on the USS Ponce.
New to the Navy, just since November.
Thanks, I don't think I know what rank or dept besides the FN. Sorry for being ditsy. I just talked to him they are stuck in an airport because the one they are going to is closed for 8 hrs. They are putting them up in a hotel, he probably won't get there until Friday. Pam are you from TN, I clicked on your name and saw Clarksville. We live in TN also.
Thanks I will probably have a lot of questions. He was excited but a little scared about going. I think after he found out he wasn't going by himself there were about 8 others that were going to other ships over there too he was better. Does your son get to call or is it strictly e-mail?
I am so excited. I went to Navy News Service website last night and in the search column, typed in USS Ponce and so much information and photos are there. I scrolled through the photos and in the nineth one dows, there is my son. The URL, in case any of you would like o take a look, is http://www.navy.mil/search/photolist.asp. When you get to that page, type USS Ponce in the search box on the right hand side.
They are doing a Medical Triage exercise on a "wounded" sailor after an attack. Doug is part of the medical team performing triage on a wounded sailor. He is the one sort of kneeling over the "wounded" sailor with his arm under him. He has a back pack on and I could see part of his name on it. TAY and under that, DO (for Taylor, Doug.
The guy with the orange cap with the red cross is the actual medical person on the scerne. Doug is being shown where to look for unseen wounds, exit wounds, or collateral damage to ther spine and other areas. Very important exercises because when battle occurs, the corpsman cannot be everywhere at once. So keu personnel (Doug and others in this picture) in repair lockers are given medical triage training to augment the medical staff.
My nephew who is a retired Naval Officer, gave me this information. I know you will all enjoy this website and you may see photos of your sons there also. I can't tell you how excited I was to see this but I'm sure you can all relate.
