I didn't realize there were two until you told me about your sons job which made me think there must be. I checked in the site and found that out. So is your son in Jacksonville or Virginia?

I just read that the Roosevelt destroyer works in both the 5th & 6th fields of responsibility.  The Roosevelt carrier is currently being rebuilt prior to deployment which would likely be the 5th field (Middle East) as it's stationed in Norfolk.  There have not been other craft assigned to the fleet yet of carrier Roosevelt...this will be done when the rebuild is complete & training closer to done, I guess.  Wow, that must be confusing to have two vessels with the same name...but not the same numbers & letters of course!

Well, I'm surely learning some new things!  I wasn't aware that there is more than one Roosevelt in the Navy.  My son is on the carrier which is apparently CVN-71.  The Destroyer appears to be DDG80.  Now that makes sense, eljac913 that your son would be closer to where you live.  Do both of these vessels go out together when they deploy the Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group?  I'm going to have to do a little more research.  Anyone know about this?

Hey Debmn, I realized sometime after I commented that I believe our sons are on two different ships.  Mine is on the destroyer.  Yours is the carrier?  Yes, I feel very lucky that we live close although mine is pretty good at keeping in contact with us.  Wow, you have a large family.  I have a daughter who is 23, older than her brother and living at home while going to college.  And that is it so it is pretty quiet at our house.  I have 3 siblings who live close by though each with their own kids and grandkids.  My turn for grandkids will come someday.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one who has to look up Navy language.  When talking to my son, I feel like he is speaking another language.  I hate saying what is that to everything so I try to write it down and look it all up.  Someday I will get it!  I hope everything works out for your son's wedding and your new grandbaby.

I had to look up what an OS is, eljac913!  haha....the Navy has more abbreviations than education!  It seems very possible that our sons would eventually meet or work together or in close proximity.  You are so lucky that your son is somewhat close...mine is a long way from Minnesota & is not a great communicator.  Sure do miss him!  My only stress about my other son's wedding is that my sailor be able to be home.  I also have three step-daughters and a total of 7 grandkids ages 2-6....they're all so cute but sometimes THAT is stressful.  One of the girls lives in Texas and is due to have grandson #8 within the week.  Hopefully all goes well & we will meet him soon.  Finally have some sun here, so I'm looking forward to whipping our 1.5 acre yard into shape!

Thank you Debmn for the information.  My son is an OS on the Roosevelt.  He receives most of his training now there.  I am lucky to live that close because he can come home on weekends sometimes.I hope to gain as much info as I can from other parents who have experienced deployment as I am new to this.

Having one son in the Navy and another getting married must be stressful at times.  I hope everything turns out well and I hope your sailor gets to go home for the wedding.  Yes, it can be difficult trying to make plans around the Navy.  I have learned.

ChelseaM, did anyone answer your question?  We can't answer much here, but I believe there will only be short training deployments yet in 2013....takes a long time to get a full crew ready for all of their jobs. All things in good time, I guess!

Nice to hear from you, eljac913!  I've been fairly involved in a site for the Eisenhower so I'm hoping to connect with some Roosevelt folks prior to their deployments.  My son is an ABH (aircraft handler) and went to the Middle East for 6 months last year.  It helped a lot to share the experience with other parents & to share information too about mailings, what to expect, etc.  I'm FAR from an expert but I did learn a few things.  Hopefully the first deployments will be short training runs so our guys can feel more comfortable.  My big stress right now is that my youngest son is getting married Dec. 14th...all is happy with the wedding but our concern is whether my sailor will be able to be home & the Best Man.  That seems to be at the top of my prayer list these days!  Is your son training in Florida as you mentioned he was close by.  If so, for what job?  Carriers are so huge, but sometimes sailors have been able to make connections through their moms...haha....I'm sure they all get a good chuckle at our expense!

Hi Debmn....My son is on the Roosevelt also.  He has been on for about a year now and we face his first deployment.  I would love to connect with you and other family members from the Roosevelt.  I have no idea what to expect and am happy  to have found someone who has been through this experience.  I live in Florida about 4 hours away from where my son is located.  Welcome to the group.

HI, everyone!  I have a son on the Roosevelt & know from past experience that we will need each others' support as they get closer to training & full deployment times.  My son is an ABH & was deployed with the Eisenhower for 6 months last year.  I look forward to getting to know you & am willing to answer questions if I can.  Looking forward to making connections.  Anyone else from Minnesota?
