It has been a long time since I have been on this site. Is there any way of knowing the schedule of the rushmore? My daughter is on board. Looking forward to getting to know you all and sharing information!

Anyone hear from their sailors?  I had a few emails but I haven't heard anything for about three days. I thought that they may be pulling into port today, at least I was hoping.  I know my daughter has been working 20+ hours.

So excited for your daughter to join the Rushmore. They are actually on deployment. Underways are very short trips. This one should be 7-8 months long.

The ships usually are deployed for 7 months or so and home for three or four months doing short underways and then back out again.

You will want to check into the Tiger Tour at the end of this deployment. That is a chance for you to fly to Hawaii and sail back to San Diego with your sailor. It takes a week and costs $51, last I heard. Half way through deployment, they will let us know when this will happen so we can plan. It is interesting to be on the ship and see how it all works and how much our kids have learned and have grown.

Again, Welcome aboard Mom. Excited for you! Hope to meet you in the spring.

I have heard from my daughter a few times. They are to pull in to Hawaii today but only for 18 hours. It would be the last time they can use their cell phones to call home (if they kept them on).

I bought my daughter Ship to Shore cards and her cell phone can be used overseas but, I don't know how much we may hear from her when she's in port. I did hear about the Tiger cruise, we talked about it, but she said, she thinks she just wants to take the first leave and come home, lol!  We aren't sure what we are doing, we are playing it by ear.  If she comes home for the first leave, we will go and see her later and spend a few weeks with her.

Sounds like you are finding a rhythm that works best for your family. Playing by ear is the best thing to do because things can change. We are in a different place, in that we live near San Diego.

As she is on board and finding her way it will help with your decisions. From what I have been told, by the time the Tiger Tour happens they are so homesick that having family come back to port with them is a comfort. I can tell you, it was more emotional than I expected when they left Monday. Seeing moms about to have babies and saying good bye to their husbands, seeing three year old boys yelling "I love you dad" as the ship pulled away was more then this mom's heart could take. So glad this isn't war time. This ship is safe and our kids will be fine. So happy for that fact.

Good luck in working through all of this. You will be fine and more information will start coming your way to make that easier.

Blessings!

Hello, Everyone; my son just joined USS Rushmore within the last couple of months and is on deployment now.  I am hoping to learn from you if there is information to share.  First deployment.  Yahoo!  Thanks, Cara

This is my daughter's first deployment also.  She hasn't been in the Navy very long so I am new to all of this.  I didn't get a call from her the other night at 1 in the morning, I guess they can call once in a while on the ship.  We bought her ship to shore cards and she said they can buy then in the NEX.  She said its hard and she's tired.  She a bit homesick we all have birthdays in November including her and the holidays, I think are going to be a bit hard for her. But, she's made some friends and she's having fun. She doesn't tell us a lot on email because of of OPSEC.  We send her long emails, and I get two sentence replies but I know there are things she can't talk about, so I don't ask her any specifics of where or what she is doing, I try to talk about what we are doing.  Its hard for us because she is the baby and I can't wait to see her, we've been counting the days.

I haven't spoken to my son since Hawaii, and I miss him so much. Most of his communication is done with his new wife. While I totally understand, I so miss the sound of his voice. I even cried when he called from Hawiaa, and I'm NOT a crier! Ha- that's probably why he hasn't called since! His wife said he was going to try to call this week, so I keep my phone glued to my side. Now I am just trying to figure out the time difference!

We are 12 hours off from them. So when you are going to bed, they are starting their day. It make is a bit easier to figure out now. Are you getting the emails from the ships captain? They are pretty informative. You can also 'like' the USS Rushmore on Facebook. They say there are pictures and such on there. Always after the fact though so they can't be tracked.

The ship is at sea for very long stretches of time. My daughter says that anything sent from home is amazing. We sent some glow sticks and she thought she died and went to heaven. I went to the post office and picked up a bunch of the 'mail anything no matter the weight' boxes and keep them in my trunk. Then when it is full, I mail. It is cheaper for sending to the ship since they are deployed. It is a bargain. It can take at least two weeks to get to them and it goes through many hands and temperature zones, so nothing that would crush or melt. My daughter said the jelly bellys we sent were a huge hit. Just trying to be creative.

Also, check into or ask about the Tiger cruise in May. When they hit Hawaii on the way home, we can meet the ship, pay a small fee ($55 if think) and cruise back the last week with them to San Diego. More details as to when exactly and all will be given three of four months before hand so that plans can be made on all sides.

Hope some of this helps.

How do you go abot getting emails from the captain?  I have like the USS Rushmore facebook page.

Here is the email for the captain. He can add you to the list. brian.finman@lsd47.navy.mil

Hope this helps!

Has anyone gotten any emails this week from their sailors?  I haven't heard anything for a week and I am starting to freak out a little.  The last email my sailor was sick all night and that is the last I've heard.  Usually we would get an email from our sailor every or every other day.
