Hello JerseySusan!  I will do my best to keep an eye on the group and share what I know for new Moms.  I have so appreciated your wisdom and support for the short time I have been a part of this group.  A year and a half ago I was new here and needed information from time to time.  My son is hoping for exactly what Christopher has attained either in Ballston Spa or Charleston.  Good luck to you, him and your family.  So nice to be so close.  It is a eight and half hour drive for us and we have only done  it once.  He has done it two or three times!  Please check on us often.

Hello to All the "USS San Francisco SSN 711" Mom's...

Our Son Christopher rec'd official transfer orders last month to head back to the east coast. "HOORAH"!!!!! He has been aboard the USS San Francisco since 01/2010.

He & his wife will be heading back to Charleston SC next month, her home town where her parents still live, & a drive that will only take my husband & I, five hours from GA.

Christopher will be an Instructor at Joint Base Charleston for "A" school in Goose Creek SC.

It is bitter sweet leaving this site, however I will check in periodically to see how all of you are doing. I have been on this site since Coke51 opened it up back in 11/ 2010, when our sons left for their very "1st" deployment. WOW, we have all come a long way since then. There were a lot of emotions back then, as all of us didn't know to much about "Sub" life!!!

It's not an easy life for these boys that turn into men. Balancing shifts, duty, living in tight quarters for months at a time & earning their quals, is certainly an extremely demanding process that can be very emotional at times on them & on you as parents. Just listening, supporting & encouraging them through the rough times is always the best medicine. There are especially a lot of transition moments they all endure especially when there is a change in the command aboard the boat. Sometimes it's a good change & sometimes its not. Remind your sons as I leave you this quote:

"Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is precious, do not destroy it, Life is Life, Fight for It"...... Mother Teresa.....

Best of Luck to all the Mom's, Son's & Families from this site, and always remember your Ombudsman are your Liaison's. They are the kindest, sweetest group of wives that have the knowledge & are very willing to help you with information & support during your sons life aboard this sub.

Elizabeth...... keep a watchful eye out on this site, guide & direct the mom's to the answers of their questions, and keep the N4M's Community Guidelines in place. Remember too, you can always update and create a new USS San Francisco page of your own as well.

Hugs & Love To All of You & Praying for all Safe under-ways & deployments of the USS San Francisco. ((((( : ))))).

Im glad he got his box. Sucks it was opened. But it could have been inspected before going onto the boat or something. If you use a FPO box from USPS they make you fill out custom forms no matter what. So if he's in SD use a reg box. That will save on the custom form filling out.

As for halfway. I sent my husbands with him. Send a very very small box since space is limited and if a port call was near halfway i made sure to mail a bigger box and timed it right to get to him at the port. But the OMB or FRG will be the persons to contact about getting a halfway box here before they leave.

PMN(1)A(2)...Every sub is different, but usually, 1/2 way boxes are coordinated by the ombudsman's. They might send out an announcement via-email or newsletter prior to deployment for you to send a 1/2 way box to an address so it can be placed on the sub prior to it leaving. Some of the Ombudsman make up small items for the single sailors so they are not left out. On the next deployment, you can find that out by contacting your Ombudsman. They will be more than happy to help you out.

Thank you subwife 2002. I mailed a package on December 22nd (when I received the address). It missed Christmas, New Years and the 3 Kings...ha-ha. He Just received it yesterday. I panicked because post office made me fill out declaration form that clearly listed Christmas stocking and all the gift cards. Not sure if it's policy but his box was open when he received it. I will have to find someone local for his halfway box or he may not get until he returns...ha-ha.

I did while they were on deployment. So i don't see why you couldn't use his boat address to get a package to him.

Comment by Proud_mom_Navy(1)_Army(2) on January 9, 2014 at 12:12am

Has anyone mailed a package to the ship instead of directly to your Sailor at a box?

Comment by Subwife2002 on December 22, 2013 at 7:42pm

Im pretty sure, if they don't get a mail box on their own that you can mail stuff/care packages to the boat address and it will get to them.
