Amberwaves, I think he's pretty adorable!! :-) and I've always encouraged him to be a "nerd" and he's proud of it!!!

Maryellen, thank you so much. I passed it on to him. I know this sounds bad but it does make me feel a little bit better that it's not JUST him!!!!

He has always had trouble making friends, a bit of a nerd, and I honestly thought this would be a perfect fit. So far it's been really hard on him. He has been on deployment since he got there!!!

I am so glad I posted on here, again thank you guys!

it is very sad that they can't trust their shipmates. The one thing I can suggest is that they keep EVERYTHING locked up. Have them get a combo lock not a key lock, it will make it harder for them to get in too. Also make sure they keep their bunks locked. My daughter went through the same thing on the Bush. Also make sure that they get a Loss Chit on the expensive stuff and report it to their LPO's when it comes up missing. They will find it and when they do the person who took it will get a one way trip home and possibly charges filed. In this day and age its hard to believe that the people who are suppose to have your back are stealing from you. Good Luck to all.

That is sad. This seems more like hassassment to me, his dirty clothes!!! The boots were brand new so maybe they stole those to keep!!! You would think as small of a ship as it is that it wouldn't be easy to get away with stealing stuff but what do I know!!! I am still shocked!!

I have heard that there is much theft on all the ships. If you set it down, good chance it will be stolen. Sad I know!

Have any of your kids had issues of harassment or theft while on the ship? I just got this from my son:  "I have had my dirty clothes bag with about maybe $40 - $50 worth of cloths stolen about 2 days ago and just this morning I wake up to my shoe cubby empty with one pair of boots and my shower shoes in the trash and my good pair of boots still MIA so I have to waste $70." This makes me sick to my stomach, hear I thought this would be a good experience for him!

Amberwaves, I assume you have to be retired military. Just would like to hear what others have experienced when traveling military.

Has anyone flown military to Japan to see your son/daughter? We are looking at trying the military flying as I have heard it is quite the adventure...

Hello MamaCas, My son arrived just before this current deployment. We can be proud of all the young men and women on the Stethem. A great bunch for your sailor to be with.

Happy New Year! I have had a wonderful time with my sailor this past two weeks. Now I have to send him off on Monday. He'll return to SD for one last class. After that it's off to Japan. I find myself on the verge of tears. Even though I know he is headed in the right direction. I will miss seeing that young man continue to grow and learn. Love to all!
