My son will be joining the Tortuga soon. My question is can you mail a letter to him with a first class postage stamp? Can my son use the USPS fist class stamp too? Or does he have to use Japan's stamps? Thank you!

Yes you can use a first class US stamp for a letter. You can mail a box (large parcel post) available from post office for what used to be 13.45 but is now 14.85 since postal increase. The box can be filled with as much stuff as you can stuff into it! I have not received any mail from Japan-she usually texts or email so I don't know about that. Good luck to your son-my daughter has been on the Tortuga since last July-

Thank you for responding. This is a new adventure for my son. Did your daughter have to get a new phone when she got to Japan?

My son joined the Navy May of last year. He is an IC (Interior Communications) He likes it. He's excited and scared at the same to time to go to Japan. His birthday is in a couple of weeks and he is leaving for Japan on Weds. I'm hoping he gets a phone so he can text and call me.

My daughter was able to get a phone right away when she got there and got an ap for free texting. While deployed she is sometimes able to email. The are also ship to shore phones they ca know sometimes use. She was away for her b day and Christmas. It was hard but she has meet a lot of friends to help. We sent packages too.

My son has been on the Torguga for almost 2 years now, he has mailed a couple of things and the rates to mail from the ship/base appear to be the same as what I send to him.  Stuffing the large box with as much as possible is the best way to go. Since they only get leave once a year at Christmas or New Years mail means alot to him.  He does have a phone in Japan, he calls me through Skype which makes it very easy to know when it is him calling.   When they get close to a port he usually sends me messages on Facebook and we chat.    The ship has a Facebook page and if you like it you could possibly see your son/daughter in the pictures.  I have gotten some great pictures of him on the ship. When they go underway it is really nice to see them in the pictures.

Best of luck to all of our sailors!

Are they deployed now? Is it true before reporting on ship they have a indoc where they teach you about the Japan's culture and stuff? Thank you!

Yes, they are deployed now.

My son never mentioned  Japan culture teachings.  He did say that they assist the community when they are docked by visiting orphans and the elderly.

Hi Tortuga Navy Moms! When does the ship get back to Sasebo? How often does it go out on deploments? Thanks!
