Jess... Oh My Goodness! You did get very lucky. Thank you for sharing your story. I know you must be thrilled you were able to do all of that! :)

We aren't thinking of getting married between school and his duty station, because I won't be on his orders. We are thinking between A and C school, when he has his 2 week leave. We hope. :)

Thank you again!!

Hey Annamichael! Sorry its taken me so long to respond. I saw your question on here, but I started my new job this week (yay for FINALLY getting back to work!) and I've just been busy. But anyways, here's my answer:

Yes, we got to have our white wedding, but we just so happened to have a lot of things going in our favor. We got engaged February 2010 right before he deployed. My mom and I didn't start planning until after he left because the idea was that I could stay busy with planning while he was gone. I knew I wanted a spring wedding, which worked out because we're Catholic and have to be engaged at least nine months before we got married (I guess they want to make sure we're not preggo...I don't know). Anyways, we started planning after my husband left, so he wasn't there to consult on the date or anything. It just so happened that the only date in which the church was available and Longwood (where we had our reception) was available was April 2nd.

Now here's where a lot of luck came in for us. When they returned from deployment, it was time for my sailor to pick his next duty station. Now, everyone on ship knew he was getting married (the captain of his old ship was a good friend of my parents), so they helped him pick a new station that would be easy for him to bring me along just in case we weren't married yet (Norfolk). They turned in his paperwork in October, and in December we recieved his written orders. He had to re-enlist in March, and then be off his old ship by April 1st and didn't have to report to his new ship until May 9th. Because of this awesome stroke of luck, he didn't have to take leave time, we got to get married, have a honeymoon, and plenty of time to move.

Now mine and my husband's was a weird situation that just happend to work out because it was time for him to re-enlist, but its not the norm. I've known wives who have had big white weddings between A-school and his new duty station, but they had to deal with not being on his orders. But I think that if you want the big, white wedding, you will find a way to make it work. Don't settle for anything less then what you and what your sailor want (:

Not every state allows proxy marriage. Where did they get that done?
Comment by Paymaster on May 28, 2011 at 10:50am

Getting married by proxy is were one of the parties can not be at the ceremony but wants to get married.  They complete the paperwork and you take that paperwork to the court house.  You usually have some one stand in there place and the judge marries you.
