@NavyMomJeg, thanks for that information. Could you tell me what cell phone carrier your son had. That could make a difference. Your son was lucky to get such a great schedule like that. Where is he stationed?

Welcome to the group WestCoastMom- I'm a west coaster also. My son has been a Yoeman for about a year now. He is attached to a plane squadron and it seems like his focus is on the HR type of paperwork for the squadron. He enjoys it, especially the fact that he has a regular schedule. He's pretty much 7-4 Mon - Fri. I don't know how true that is for other Yoemen, but that's his experience. He's going to be deploying for 6 mos here soon and when he's deployed he works more, but that's ok since he isn't home. I'm not sure about visiting during A-school in Mississippi, we didn't go back even for his graduation as it wasn't a big production like PIR, which we did attend. Also, there is more communication during A-school but the cell reception wasn't the best. I think our son had to get to a high spot to get decent reception so he was always outside when he called. hope that helps. Also A-school is a self paced program to a great extent so the faster they get through their "lessons" the faster they get out which is one reason why you may get conflicting information on length of time.

My son just went to BC on Tuesday and I am learning more on this site than he has ever communicated with me. He has also signed on to be a Yeoman and don't know exactly what they do, but in reading from you posts I get a little more understanding. He is 18 and does not tell me much. Now I was under the impression that school in Mississippi was 7 months long, but I saw a post that someone stated 7 weeks. I'm getting conflicted information. Anyhow, I hope to hear from others about their experiences and any other info. Also, are we allowed to visit them while they are at school?

Hello Folks,  My son is on the USS Ike, just deployed this week. It is his first deployment so I am trying to figure all this out!

Laurie 1029, This is a group on here I joined when my son was in Meridian and it really helped. If you read the comments posted on here you will learn how things will work there.

 Laurie1029, You still have quite a bit of wait time still! I thought they changed BC to 12 weeks, or at least that's what my sailor told me they did 2 months after he graduated BC. But any way, my son went to Meridian, Ms, they have way to much freedom there, is nothing like BC. Yeoman school will be at least 8 weeks once it start if there's enough student to start. And remember bad weather prolongs their stay time if they can't fly. Recruiters are hardly ever right with what they tell you will happen and time wise. My son is in BESS rite now at Groton, Ct and will graduate this friday. My son's home port is Hawaii, and he will be coming home before he has to be there.

Great Lakes, Meridian both have a graduation you get to attend, I would highly suggest you go to BC graduation it a great experience.

Hi everyone. My son, Cory, leaves for bootcamp on 8/12/13 and he is going in as a Yeoman. Can anyone tell me where your Yeoman are now and what they are doing? I know we have a long way to go with 9 weeks of bootcamp & 7 weeks in Meridian. But I'm just curious about the different places he may go & the different things he could do.

My son is a Yeoman on the USS New Mexico, stationed at Groton, CT. I used this site so  much when my son first joined; I felt like I didn't know anything. Once he and I both became a little more settled, I didn't feel the need for the support quite so much I guess.

Good point  Lady Hamilton! I don't visit this group that often because it seems no one get on it. I've had questions about YN but had to find answers else where.

My son and I are newbie's to the navy! I'm extremely proud of the man he's becoming. He has changed a lot in the last 8 month his been in.                           Rite now he is in Groton, Ct finishing up BESS, he graduate's in to weeks.        His home port is Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on the USS Texas sub. Rite now the USS Texas is in drydock for a year, so he will be a ghost rider on another for awhile.

Mine is up in Whidbey Island. He's attached to a squadron. He's been home almost a year so like Kim I haven't been hanging around N4Ms much. He's getting ready to deploy in a couple months to the middle east we think so then I will probably be back on more! He and his family seemed to be pretty settled now but we shall see once deployment starts.
