My son left for Yokuska on March 24th I heard from him daily til now. I have had no contact with him now for 8 days. We were using facebook to communicate and my messages go unanswered. Is this normal? He is on the USS Antietam and I am very worried. He is 18 and the last he said to me was he wanted me to send him a cake on his birthday. It is n a few weeks. Any information would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks to Elane L and Amberwaves for the info on Yokuska travel. Traveling next week so I'm getting excited.
Hope you had a great trip Elane.
@ azmchavez visiting there now... my advice is make sure you have JR rail pass... if you want to do any traveling. trains go everywhere. But you can't get one for your sailor.. only visitors less than 90 days in country can get them AND you have to get the exchange order for the BEFORE you get to Japan. a trip to Hiroshima and back cost sailor 340...we had rail passes which had cost us 270 ...plus we are not done yet. they are available in 7, 14 and 21 days passes. Son is also lives off base as well so we're cutting expenses..although someone at the guest pass office tried to tell us that he should of let the Navy know he had visitors. Not sure why they care who stays in a civilian house..but have your daughter check into IF she's in base housing even off base. the form he was talking about needed to be filed 3 days prior to you arriving. ..BE prepared to do alot of walking between everything. or spend money on cabs/buses.
son has a GPS on his Japan phone that has helped a lot with finding stuff. The ITT office has some tours decently priced... they need to booked in advance. Not sure what ship you daughter is on..but make sure she has the leave chit approved before you book tickets they are a pain to change the dates. ( I DO know this from experience). hopefully your daughter is planning on at least some of the time off that you are here. It's much easier and fun to explore Japan with them. Have fun, I know I am.
sailormum my son is currently in Yokosuka and he was on the wilbur for a while. Make sure you join there fb page as they post pics quite often. Your son will love Japan. Mine has had a wonderful time. He has gotten to see places I can only dream of. He will need to get a new phone once he gets there. If you both have iphones facetime is free. If not you can skype for free or download any of the free texting apps. We used viber until i got an iphone. Let us know what other info you need. Also make sure he gets his passport before he goes. He doesnt need one while traveling on orders but if he wants to explore with friends he will need one. My son was lucky her had his when he went back from vaca in the states. As he grew his beard out so they had to make sure he really was a sailor.
Well it has been a long almost 4 years for my twin sons. #1 son will be getting out hopefully in August and coming home from Japan. #2 son will be reenlisting and has gotten his next duty station - Whidbey in Washington. Which is so awesome because it is only 5-6 hours from home! So he will be leaving Yokosuka also in August he thinks. Thank you to everyone here for continuing to help out!
@ safety Mom, mine has been there since last December, and in the Navy for 6 years. I send his favorite non perishable foods. He likes the micro meals, easy Mac, canned Ravioli, etc. He has access to a micro on his ship. Baked goods are sendable, just keep in mind there might be a 3-4 travel time..so what ever you send you don't want to send anything that might mold easily (ie: too moist of cupcakes) or stuff that will melt (ie chocolate in the summer). I have vacuum sealed some stuff, some I've just put in ziplocks, some I have "canned". (ie: pie in a jar). Just remember large priority flat rate USPS box and Fill if FULL..if there is room to shift there is room for breakage of box or contents.
as far as what they can do over the holidays, I'm sure there are plenty of groups having things to do. USO, the FRG for the ship he's on, etc. I can't imagine them sitting in their dorm/ship rooms starring at the walls...unless of course they want to.
Gifts: depends on your sailor, some like food, some like books, some like small games, some like games/stuff for their electronic devices... Some like the $ to get those things they want/need. Keep whatever small in size as they don't have alot of space to store stuff in and I'd personally mark higher dollar stuff you might send. Theft is a problem in some areas. (not sure where the honor code went). Hope this helps a bit.
Thanks Mary
