My son left a little over a month ago for Yokosuka, it was a very emotional experience because this will be the longest time since he was born that he has been away from me. Once he arrived, I learned that he was assigned to the ship with the worst reputation in the Yokosuka fleet. I pray daily for his safety and the safety for all of his shipmates.
My son is aboard the USS Shiloh home port in Yokosuka. He got an iphone which was stolen while he was aboard ship. Be sure that they activate the find my iphone feature and get insurance if they can. That was a $600. lesson for our son. He got a local skype number so we text him on imessage for free. He also uses an app called voxer which is like a walkie talkie push to talk app. The toughest part about communication is the 15 hour time difference. Hope your sailor likes Japan.
navymom3 - I'm glad to hear your son likes it in Japan. That seems to be the general consensus all around. My sailor is on his flight now and I am very sad. But, the good news is he was very excited.
FYI - the guy at AT&T sent me to the Apple store to get his iPhone 'unlocked" so he could use it there. We drove all the way over to Apple (quite a trek) only for them to laugh at us - they don't do that and told us we are not allowed to have that done. (You can have it done if you find a geek that is willing...) Just thought I would share and save anyone else the trouble. He will just have to get a phone in Japan.
jaus- I just saw your son will be on the wilbur. My son will be going out with the wilbur when it goes out again. My son like it over there so far. He has been there 40 days now. My sons job gives him the opportunity to go out with different ships. The Wilbur happens to be the first one.
misslaurali - What a beautiful bride! (And of course a handsome groom.) I know you are so proud. My oldest son is getting married in July and we are in the throws of planning a huge wedding (she has lots of family). It's going to be quite an affair! Congratulations to you!
Thanks to everyone for all for the info. I needed a starting place. Most of all I just needed to know that I can communicate.
Sad day for me - today is the day. But, he is so excited to be going that I can't be too upset. What an advenure!
Everyone keep in touch - I miss the activity on this group and thanks again!
Jansu831-We have skype but have not used it yet. My son also got an iphone right after he landed. So I had his turned off. He found a app called viper that we use and you can text and call for free. But you both have to load the free app. When they get an iphone there they don't have to pay for it out right. My son said his bill is a little more but no out of the pocket money. We use the text the most and text almost everyday.
Can anyone tell me what the best way has been to communicate with your sailor in Japan? Mine is just now leaving to go there. He will have a cell phone but when I checked with AT&T, it's pretty expensive to just call back and forth. Are calling cards better? What about texting? So many questions!!!
schlotterbacksl(ship 11 div 122) ...Do ya ave the email for your hubby's ship Ombudsman? Maybe they can help ya with those questions. I am sorry that I can't. help my sailor is single.
Blondie.... I was thinking he same thing!!
