Hi, My son just graduated "A" school at Pensacola, FL, He's coming home for three weeks leave before reporting to the USS Shiloh, Japan. His rate is IT. Anyone else with a Sailor on the Shiloh? We live in Ohio and Jason is my only child. Haven't seen him since he left for Boot Camp back on March 22. Can't wait! My dad and three of my brothers were Sailors so the Navy isn't new to me

Carolina....it sounds like our daughters got to Yokosuka around the same time. Kelcie is and E4 also. I know she was glad that she made E4 before she went over, cause E3 and below have to live on board even when they are in port. I know that being an E4, she can move off base if she wants to. She is thinking about getting a house in town with some friends once they come back in for the winter. Depending on their rate, it can be very hard to make the jump from E4 to E5. Kelcie made E4 within 2 years, but hasn't been able to make E5 in over a year now. I guess there just aren't very many openings for E5's in her rate. She also loves the Navy and has never once regretted her decision to join. I think so far that she like being out to sea more than being in port. I think it's the excitement of looking forward to the next port. She is on the GW also.

Blondie, it was all over the news last weekend when "invinsible spirit" 1st began. What was it that you saw it on last night?

Hi Janet, welcome to our group. Not totally sure of the housing on base, as my daughter lives in the barracks when they are in port. I would guess that there are some houses on base as well. If not, I know that quite a few of her friends have houses out in town. When they are out to sea, they close up the barracks. I'm sure some moms on here can add to this. Kelcie loves it over there. She has just been there since October, but says that the people are wonderful and always eager to help. Most vessels have their own groups on here as well, so when he finds out, check it out. Welcome Aboard :>)

Thanks Blondie.....my hubby is from Ohio also. A suburb of Cleveland.....Berea. His sister lives in Akron, and his nephew in Tiffin. Yeah, it's hard to believe that the 1st parade dedicated to Vietnam Vets in the whole stinking state took place here in our rinky dink little town. We had groups come from HOURS away to participate.

Blondie, our small town held the 1st ever Vietnam Vet's parade ever put on in California. It was just this last spring, and there wasn't an inch of unoccupied sidewalk, or curb. It was SO moving and the community support did wonders for the Vets (one of which is my husband). I know there was a ton of video taken, I'll have to try to figure out how to post some of it on here also.
Thanks so much for your post!! This kind of thing is just to special for words!

Hmmmmm, never thought of that! It seemed like when access did come back it was a steady stream of comments. Maybe we WERE at least being "checked up on"??? Don't think we are much of a threat!! But then again......we are "MOMS" and they better not jerk us around TO much, or we might become one :>) :>)

I had the same problem a few days ago on the GW group, but it seems to have taken care of itself now.
