I am a new Navy Mom, just found your group! I live in the East Haddam area of Ct and would love to meet other Navy Moms in my area. My son is on the GW in Japan, he just arrived there 3 days before they went on patrol. He did call me from the ship last week. So good to hear his voice and know he is safe and happy. I just mailed him a couple of packages to keep his spirits up, but I would love to be a part of your packing party that you are organizing!

What is a packing party

The June mission has been posted on Molly's Adopt A Sailor's page.  I am going to copy and paste the info in that discussion into the discussion above.  It includes info about the group that we are adopting - they are on the GW and work on the flight deck.

Their 'wish list' is also in the discussion.  Also, the theme:  "Yellow and Blue Barbeque".

So check out the discussion and let's get ready to have some fun at our packing party!!

@ Marlene, I just sent you a friend request.  Just talking with MJ and we are thinking we should consider changing date so Moms have a chance to do some shopping (by that I mean finding the good deals!).  Having a church hall would be great, we can really spread out to do our packing. And, I'm sure we can pitch in and help with clean-up and setting things to right again.

MJ has about 35 boxes, I have maybe 12 so we probably have the boxes covered & if Moms can pick up a couple at their local PO's we will have plenty. But we will need packing tape, labels, scissors, markers, pens -- the things we would just grab if we were doing it at home.

Some Moms buy when they see things (I'm one of those), but I don't have enough for a packing party. Every one brings items.  BUT, no one needs to go out and buy some of everything! I have a budget that fits my family and I buy what I can within that dollar amount.  I also always go to customer service counters and ask for donations.  Sometimes it means a return trip to bring them a letter requesting a donation, but hey it is worth it. Supermarkets, drug stores, Walmart, etc. are all great starting points. What is the worse they can say - no - and then shame on them. So don't be afraid of asking!

The wish list will be posted on Molly's Adopt A Sailor. When it is I will re-post it into the discussion above. Also, then we will know who we are sending the items to.  They will be getting their boxes in July so we may want to think of sending things red, white or blue (ex. red toothbrushes, blue candy...)  Just a thought.

Finally and most important - we need to include MAIL. So if everyone writes a card, note and/or letter a week until the packing party, someone who get no mail at all will have something to open and read. If you have young children, get them to draw pictures or write notes too.  School may be winding down, but you may be able to find a teacher or two who will do it as a class project.

Remember:  Food and items will be eaten and used up, but those letters and pics will be carried around for a long, long time.

Also:  Our packages will be added to others from around the country, so we send what we can because all the packages are from all of us.  So no matter the size of your budget, everyone participates and that is what counts!!

(Don't forget to check out the discussion above for more info.  It will be posted there as we receive it. A comment will be posted that such and such is now available. It will keep all our party info in one spot.)

Can't wait to meet you!

@CTmomof3 -- I will be praying about your son and his idea of "looking into going to A-stan".  My goodness, what is it about boys?!?!  They keep us on our toes as little boys and continue on as young men. Perhaps 'they' will decide they have enough workers and don't need him...  Like I said we'll have to pray.

it's not really an IA billet which makes me more concerned. Because of where he works it's a tad weird. Listen to this. A government dept (im not naming it) was/is building a new "office" on a base there. Sheetrock was too expensive to obtain so the cheapest material they could get was......MARBLE....can you imagine. He's in the ..getting info stage at the moment. I just don't like him even...entertaining...the idea.
