@Donna...I replied to your email, then I read the posts here. We can have the party wherever you suggest. After reading where everyone lives, it might be easier to head down near the shore where it might be more convenient for the others. I'd be happy to drive down and bring goodies for the boxes, the boxes and the customs forms. I'll be flexible.
Hey Everyone! We have enough for a wonderful packing party already. I count 4 CT Moms and one outsider (me).
I'm sorry I didn't get back to to the computer yesterday. I will start a discussion above now so you can all just jump in with ideas and questions and let's get this party on the N4M Calendar!!! WooYah.
I will add a discussion so everyone can add their thoughts and ideas on what to do. And, it will keep everything in one spot so we are more organized. I'll try to get to that later this evening.
@Marlene, Plainville, MA is right on the border with RI. I am literally minutes from Pawtucket and about 15-20 min from Providence. I could easily make a drive from here to some place as close as Groton/Mystic only in the northern part of CT. That is about an 1-1/2 to 2 hrs. from me. But we can work on the place later. I did mention it to my husband, sort of hinting that I might need a ride to CT possibly as far as Hartford. He didn't answer - I just meant to put the idea in his mind and let him think about it!
A packing party is where a group of people gather to pack care packages for a group of deployed military. In MA we always "adopt" the same group that Molly's Adopt A Sailor (MAS) puts up for adoption. They have already done all the leg work: choosing a group, getting someone to be the point of contact person so that all the packages go to one person to be held until everyone's packages get there and then distributing them.
MAS receives a wish list of items they would like to receive or things they are missing having. Also, there is a Mom of the Month who starts a discussion and so we usually end up with some sort of theme.
Then we set about purchasing and asking for donations of the items on their list. We also write cards and notes to be distributed as mail, especially to any that do not receive any or very little mail. I like to try and find postcards from the area and write on them. First it gives them an idea of what it is like from the area the packages are coming from and second it is pretty easy to write a postcard, not too much space to fill. Sending some mail is really important. I sometimes try to get a couple of school classes to write or have the little ones draw pictures. The whole concept is that the items in the boxes will be eaten or used up, but letters, notes and cards can be kept and read over and over again.
Hey MOM C AND Marlene! Just looked to see where you 2 are from. I don't think my knee would let me drive that far in a day. BUT, maybe we can organize one if we can find some place further east that I can get to??
Of course, I don't need to be there ~ I'd love to help you get one going. PM me and we can talk, or better yet, let's start a discussion forum so everyone can participate in planning and talking about what to do.
Any thoughts?
Hi Moms! Just stopping by to say hello and see what is happening with you all. I am still in PT for my knee, but I am happy to say things are slowly improving. At least I feel like I'm making progress -- it is just so incredibly slow!
@ Jeanetti, let's have a packing party!!! Want to have one in June? They will be announcing June's adoption soon, but we can get started by picking a place, time and date. What do you think? Anyone else want to get involved in planning? I can't drive very far yet, but at least I can drive and get to you all.
Let's stop thinking about it and just have one. It'll be great and a LOT of fun.
Hello CT and welcome Mom C!
