Oh how funny DramaSoul. I am from Illinois so SA wasn't all that bad since it was the same time zone. Now I have to remember he is 2 hours behind us. He forgets it all the time. He keeps texting at midnight our time and 10 his time. He doesn't think that it is that big of a difference. I know he didn't get a choice as to where he was going for FMTB. CP was where he was told he was going.
medic mom...Our stories are the SAME! He wanted to be a medic and my nephew, who is a nurse anesthetist in the Army and an officer, told him "You didn't hear this from me but if you want to be a medic, the Navy has the best program." I was soo relieved when he joined the Navy. Safe on a ship or shore, right? Not boots-on-the-ground, right? Until...he talked about FMTB. I am so proud of him but I come from a decidedly non-military background. I live in the NW so we are on the same coast. That's one of the reasons he chose Camp P over Camp Lejeune. I remember when he was in SA...that 2 hour time difference was sooo hard!
The funny thing is DramaSoul I feel better each time I talk to him. He has a calming effect on me. I am grateful that I can talk more to him. Just trying to remember that there is a 2 hour time difference is hard. LOL Things get easier and easier the longer he does this. He has been at CP since January. Done with training and now just hanging with the guys. I am terrified on one hand and proud on the other. What a combo! I have no problems letting him know that I am terrified but dealing with it. When he signed up for the Navy we had talked with all the other branches also. He REALLY wanted to be a Marine. I was over the moon happy when he chose the Navy. Then a few months after he signed up I learned what he signed up for. Then I was horrified. We just recently laughed about it all though. I told him that he found the backdoor in to being a Marine and he laughed and said yep I did. It all worked out for him. Glad to be part of the Navy family but also thrilled that I get to be a part of the Marine family also. It is how I look at it. I have 2 military families at the same time. One lucky mom.
medic mom....I agree! We want our Sailors SAFE!!
I was in the phase of "OH MY G*D! You wanna do what?!!" Now I am just trying to focus on breathing. I understand your terror. My son has never been happier or confident than he is now in the greenside training.
Welcome Mushrush! I know that my son is currently a hospital corpsman but he is going for his fmf pin. I was scared at first about his decision but have since calmed down about the whole thing. He is in such amazing hands with his Marine unit that I cannot complain. He also loves being a greenside corpsman. It is still terrifying to me but I am overcoming it day by day.
Marcy..yes the Corpsman Moms and Dads group is also another great group to be in. I just wanted another option for greenside corpsman moms and such to have.
DramaSoul...not sure about platoons and squadrons might be ok but things like first names where they are deployed at and things like that are no nos. If you wanna exchange info like that you can do it in private messages with each other. I will have to reread the rules again myself. Not trying to be mean about things but wanna keep our sailors safe. I think that during training it is ok to mention squads and platoons. Just gotta be careful when they are out and about after training and first names also. We don't want people taking advantage of us or our sailors. That's all I was trying to say.
So if I re-read the OPSEC rules we must not include any specificity. I think I had unknowingly erred on that in the past and went back and deleted the post. No info about Platoon or Squadron or anything like that, correct?
To the first part of your question -
FMF qualification is earned by Navy enlisted members assigned to the Fleet Marine Force of the U.S. Marine Corps who have successfully completed the necessary requirements of the Enlisted Fleet Marine Force Warfare Specialist (EFMFWS) Program. This involves serving with a Marine Corps Unit, passing a written test, demonstrating skills used in service with the Marines, and an oral examination by senior enlisted sailors who are FMF qualified. Enlisted Warfare Specialist FMF Device Program: http://www.lejeune.usmc.mil/2dfssg/med/FAQ.html
To be fair, this is also a good group http://www.navyformoms.com/group/corpsmanmomsanddads. Our members go way back having been through numerous deployments, including SpecOps, and we have a number of currently deployed. We keep the chat going to always be there for anyone needing us.
Also wanna put this out there for all of us here. I know we all know about OPSEC rules. Please as a courtesy to all here follow their rules. I don't wanna see any of our devil docs and just plain docs get into trouble due to loose lips. Thank you for listening. I don't wanna have to go Marine mom on any of you. LOL
