OPSEC - Navy Operations Security
Always keep Navy Operations Security in mind. In the Navy, it's essential to remember that "loose lips sink ships." OPSEC is everyone's responsibility.
DON'T post critical information including future destinations or ports of call; future operations, exercises or missions; deployment or homecoming dates.
DO be smart, use your head, always think OPSEC when using texts, email, phone, and social media, and watch this video: "Importance of Navy OPSEC."

In light of observed changes and impact of the Coronavirus Delta Variant and out of an abundance of caution for our recruits, Sailors, staff, and guests, Recruit Training Command is restricting Pass-in-Review (recruit graduation) to ONLY fully immunized guests (14-days post final COVID vaccination dose).

I just got my first REAL letter from my son in BC today. It made me laugh and cry all at once. Seems like he's doing well and he likes eating. LOL He said he had watch when they went to NEX over the weekend and said he is running out of stationery. I guess I can add a few sheets of lined paper with my letters. Is that allowed? I've only been squeezing one 8x11sheet into my letters to him so I am thinking that adding a few blank pieces might be alright.

You know it just dawned on me that my hubby can print them at his work as it is a sign/blueprint shop. I will talk to his boss and see what they say, pretty sure they will be more than willing to accommodate us. I don't know why I wasn't thinking about it that way. Guess I'm still not thinking quite clearly. Thank you for the detailed info too. That makes a lot of sense. I have heard stories from retired Navy friends about boot camp photos. LOL

I sent 4 or 5 printed 4x6 photos to my son in my first letter, and had no problem - at least, he didn't tell me he had a problem, and he said he received them. They were all family pics.
sierrascrapper - just a thought - the local library may be able to print a word doc with pictures on them. It would cost alot less than the color ink, at least for the time being. My sister prints her boarding passes at the library whenever she travels to places without a printer nearby. Might be worth checking out. Not sure if they do color copies, though.

Also, photos are not "taken away" they are torn up by the recruit because the RDC would not want to be put in a position of having photos of a questionable nature in his/her possession.

spomss, probably. Most RDC's tell the recruits that they are to tear up and discard any photos they receive that are not allowed and that if they are unsure if a photo is allowed that they can show the RDC and if the photo is not allowed, then the recruit can tear up the photo and discard it without any repercussions, but to let the one who sent the photo know not to do it again. RDC's do not tear up a recruit's photos. If a recruit keeps a photo that is not permitted and it is found (usually because it sticks out of the locked A/B drawer or the recruit drops it in a hurry to hide it either back in the envelope or in the A/B drawer), then the recruit receives IT and sometimes loss of privileges, such as a phone call.

thanks lemonelephant-last year when mine was at RTC he said some guys got photos taken away-he didnt elaborate the part about what type of photos they were...must have been some not in such good taste....

Sierrascrapper, the thing about pictures is that they increase the weight of the envelope and also take up space in the A/B drawer. Pictures that are in good taste of any size (even large ones, but anything over the size that fits in a card or letter should be avoided) are permitted at the RTC and will not be taken away. You can usually send one or two photos with a one or two-page letter and not go over the one ounce limit for a 49 cent stamp.

good to hear Sierrascrapper about it getting easier...fun for you to take flat Jonathon with you!! think the idea about the photos is because they may get taken away-unless you send small enough to fit in a wallet?? I am sure that a black and white photo on printer paper will be welcomed by him...

Another question...everyone says print your pictures on your paper that you are writing on. I need to go invest in some color cartridges for my printer, but have to wait a week or two for finances to make it happen. Will they get in big trouble if we send real photos too?
We made a "Flat Jonathan" and took him camping with us and to the fireworks and parade last week. It was SO MUCH FUN and it was quite the conversational piece. We took some hilarious photos and I would like to at least be able to send a choice few photos to him at least until I can buy some color ink for my printer. But I would hate for him to get in trouble for me sending a couple in my letters.
Also wanted to say they after a few days of writing letters, it got easier. Of course we were really busy this past weekend, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. Thank you a
